Weekend Wrap - Feild Of Oma-zing Class
October 29th 2006 23:13
Today we welcome back an old friend, and that is the perfect tool for anyone who missed the action this weekend, the Sporting Mind weekend wrap!
As the Spring Carnival gears up for the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup, we see the field of class that is appearing. The W.S Cox Plate saw a legend finish off a stellar career with style and class, as Fields of Omagh was able to win this race for the second time. The nine year old was able to pip El Segundo at the post by a nose and finished his career as a champion horse, who was always a fixture during the last decade’s spring carnival.
In the Rugby League Tri-Nations , the Kiwis look to have locked a finals berth whilst Great Britain now have to win two of their next three games to stay in contention. New Zealand were able to dominant the Brits just after halftime to rush away to a 18-2 lead, before being brought back to within a try in the closing minutes. Whilst Great Britain pushed to the final stages, they were unable to upset the home side, losing 18-14. The Poms now have to win at least one of their two games against Australia, and their next game against New Zealand, to secure a finals berth.
In the A-League , Melbourne was able to stamp their dominance in the comp, killing the woeful New Zealand Knights 4-0. However the match of the round has to go to Newcastle, who in a bizarre set of circumstances defeated Adelaide 2-1 on Friday night. In the final five minutes the Jets lost a defender a gave a penalty after a player punched a ball which would be a certain goal, but Adel skied the set shot to lose the lead. The final nail in the coffin came as the 10-man Newcastle side scored in the 87th minutes to secure the win. In the other matches, Central Coast and Queensland made no real headway, drawing 1-1, whilst Sydney weren’t able to get the win the side, and more especially the coach wanted so they could stay alive and within employment, drawing with Perth 1-1.
In the International Rules competition Ireland were able to cause an upset victory against the travelling Australian side. Ireland pushed hard all match leading into the second half by seven points, but the Aussies composed themselves to take back the lead until literally the final minute, where a late push by the home side saw the score change from a single point deficit to a eight point lead. Ireland now have to deal with the AFL calling for tighter security as the ground was invaded by supporters after the game, whilst the All-Australian side will be hunting for blood in the second match at Cloke Park.
Across the seas, the St Louis Cardinals were able to win their first Major League Baseball World Series since 1982, downing the Detriot Tigers 4 games to 1 in the seven game series. The Cardinals, who went into the series as outside contenders, defeated the Tigers 4-2 in the final game to claim their 10th championship for the side. St. Louis dominated the competition but fell into a late season slump made them an outside chance, but have proven many critics wrong.
Finally, in the NBL the South Dragons have won their first game of both the season and under the helm of Shane Heal, beating the Cairns Taipans by ten points, 96-86. Heal played his dual player/coach role effectively, scoring a game high 26 points in the first victory for the new club. In other matches, Tigers beat the Townsville Crocs convincingly, winning 98-83, the Razorback narrowly beat the Bullets 105-103, and The Sydney Kings beat the competition other new franchise, the Singapore Slingers 90-83.
This week we have the ICC Champions Trophy heating up, the action and goss from the A-League, plus we keep a close look on how the South Dragons are performing, make sure you stay in tune!
Until next time, sports minds.
