Weekend Wrap – NSW Dominating All Over the Codes
November 19th 2006 11:29
It seems this weekend it is Sydney and NSW who are the surprise packet, as they hold onto victory in both soccer and cricket against their interstate foes.
In the A-League , Sydney was able to hold onto the lead against the stubborn Adelaide side for victory. The Reds were able to take the lead in just nine minutes, however Sydney replied twice more in just 13 minutes to take the lead. In a match that was full of aggression and tight plays, Adelaide were unable to convert for the rest of the match as Sydney were able to claw themselves up the ladder, earning the three points. In the other games, Melbourne once more proved top be the league leaders, taking down the new look Queensland side 2-0, whilst Perth beat Newcastle 2-1, and Central Coast enjoyed a win against cellar dwellers New Zealand 2-0.
In Cricket, South Australia placed some extremely stubborn batting to end their match against England in a draw. The English, desperate to earn a victory before the start of the Ashes on Thursday, was unable to break through during their two sessions on the final day, as SA finished their second innings 2-164 to add to their 7/247 first innings total. Collingwood and Bell were able to show some strength with the willow as they made 80 and 132 respectively during England’s innings of 415.
In the domestic tournament, NSW dominated against Tasmania in the Ford Ranger Cup , grabbing a bonus point in their seven wicket victory. The Blues were able to claim the Tasmanian squad for only 166 runs in a rain affected innings, and as Jaques proved once again he is the next step in the Australian squad smashing 75 off 57 to lead the way to victory in only 28 overs. Nathan Hauritz was the leader in the Blues bowling side, grabbing the figures of 3-28 in eight overs.
In Rugby League Tri-Nations , Australia was able to boot the Lions out of the tournament, sealing a finals match with New Zealand after winning 33-10. Great Britain needed a absolute victory to earn the second spot into the final, but were unable to create two wins against the Kangaroos, as they looked far more composed than last time they met, ensuring the game was in control as they charge ahead 12-0 in only nine minutes of play. From that point the Lions tried to combat against the home side, but were unable to cause a real challenge as they whittled away their tournament hopes. All rugby fans will now be in anticipation for a great final rematch against New Zealand on Saturday.
In golf, Queenslander John Senden has won by one stroke against US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy in the MFS Australian Open . In an amazing competition, a total of six player took the lead on the final day. However Senden, who was able to overcome an mediocre start to the competition, took an unbelievable 14 under of the last 30 holes to win the tournament.
Ogilivy was in the lead for a portion of the day, however he was unable to land a birdie putt on the 18th, which saw him finish second. Nathan Green, who has lead in the first two days of the competition, was unable to keep up his fantastic form, and finished 5 under, two behind the leader.
Even though there is some interesting sport this weekend, such as the Tri-Nations final, most sports fans will be watching one thing, the Ashes. It has taken so long for this moment to come, but in only four days the action of summer will begin, and expect a fantastic five days of play.
Until next time, sports minds.
