Weekend Wrap – Australia Once Again On That Winning Feeling

March 25th 2007 12:58
Another weekend of sport is over, and whilst their was action in the NRL, the V8 Supercars, the Super 14’s and even the World Swimming Championships, all eyes were over in St. Kitts as Australia was taking on South Africa in the Cricket World Cup.

Australia were once again on that winning feeling, beating South Africa in the highly anticipated World Cup Group match. As the game was simply to see who would finish top of the group, their was a lot at stake, as Australia was about to take on the side that upended them out of the one day number one ranking.

But Australia proved to the world that they are still the dominant one day squad, beating the world no 1 South Africa by 83 runs. The Aussies leapt to an impressive 6/377, lead by the fastest century in world cup history by Matthew Hayden (66 balls), and whilst South Africa gave them a scare with an 160 opening partnership, they stumbled and collapsed at the worst possible time, losing their last nine wickets for just 74 runs. Australia has now topped their group and with South Africa will go into the super 8’s.

At the other end of the scale, India are now in a mild stage of panic, going down to Sri Lanka by 69 runs and now resting their hopes of advancing on Bermuda winning. Sri Lanka started by earning a steady 6/254, and India could never get on the front foot, going all out in 43 overs by 185 runs. All their hopes now rest with Bermuda, who would have to upset Bangladesh for India to advance to the super 8’s tonight.

In other games, England were able to climb into the super 8’s stage, taking out Kenya by three wickets with 10 overs remaining. Kenya scored the modest 177 runs in a rain heavy morning, and lead by Ed Joyce’s 75 off 90 balls England were able able to grab that elusive second place with relative ease. And West Indies proved to be one of the dominant sides this competition, beating the dark horse Ireland by eight wickets in their final group match. Ireland proved no match for the home side, scoring the miserly 183 runs which West Indies earned the victory, and with it keep the top group spot going into the super 8’s along with Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies, Ireland and either India or Bangladesh.

In the NRL , the Cowboys kept their winning success so far this season and top the ladder after scoring their biggest ever win against the Sydney Roosters, winning 43-6. The Cowboys were never in doubt of winning and now leave the Roosters and the bottom of the table and still looking for that elusive 1000th club win. In other games, the Rabbitohs also kept their winning ways, beating last season’s surprise packet Parramatta 31-6, and the Warriors stormed back from 10-2 deficit against the Broncos to score four tries in 11 minutes to take the game 24-14.

Manly defeated the Tigers in a rain swept Sydney ground, dominating the second half and take the win19-8, Melbourne stormed in the second half to take the game against the Raiders 32-16, Newcastle proved to their critics that they could win without skipper Andrew Johns, taking the game 16-12, whilst the Penrith Panthers bounced back from their last round loss against the Sharks to thump the Bulldogs 40-10.

In the World Swimming Championships in Melbourne, Australia
won their first gold medal of the competition taking out the women’s 4x100m freestyle. The group of Libby Lenton, Melanie Schlanger, Shayne Reese and Jodie Henry stormed the race, coming from behind America in the final leg and taking out the gold with a championship record of 3:35.48. United States and Netherlands finished second and third respectively. In the men’s competition, the United States were unable to be caught and took the gold with a time of 3:12.72. Italy won silver and France bronze. Australia finished fifth.

In Round Two of the V8 Supercars in Perth, local Garth Tander completely dominated the weekend, taking all out three races and finishing the round with 72 championship points, the maximum anyone can take from a round. Tander started the weekend unstoppable, taking out pole position, and just simply got not be caught. Rick Kelly and and Mark Skaife were the constant chasers, swapping between finishing second and third throughout the three races. Todd Kelly, who was leading on championship points before the round, gave away the lead to his brother after crashing out in the first race and only managing 10th and 7th in race 2 and 3.

In the Super 14’s The Blues kept their top ladder position, and essentially knocked the Waratahs out of the finals winning 34-6, whilst the Chiefs came from behind to keep the Red winless, coming into the second half down 16-10, to take the match with minutes to spare, winning 21-19. In other games, Brumbies beat the Sharks 21-10, Lions thrashed the Hurricanes 30-7, Bulls scraped by despite a last minute comeback by the Highlanders to win 22-13, and the Crusaders thumped the Stormers 36-11.

That is it for another sport packed weekend, but don’t stray too far. This week we have the Swimming Championships heat up for the finals, the World Cup begin it’s super 8’s campaign, and the AFL season kick off, all with the Cousins scandal still over their head.

Until next time, sports minds.
