Voss Entitled To His Farewell

October 20th 2006 12:57
With all of 2006 AFL finished except for the International Rules matches, we have said goodbye to a small number of great players who have ever graced the field, and not one was bigger and better than Brisbane captain Michael Voss.

With a number of achievements in his cabinet, including five club best and fairest, a Brownlow medal, and more importantly the three consecutive premiership medallions won from 2001 – 2003.

One of the key players, if not the biggest factor in the Lions dominance at the turn of the century, Voss was always a big as the game itself. His ability to lead his side in what sometimes looked to be the most impossible tasks made him such an icon of the game. Voss will always be one of the few greats run out onto the oval.

As his retirement was anticipated this season, it was obvious that he would be selected in the Australian squad to face up against Ireland over in the emerald isle this year, but I think the squad needs to take the one step further and hand him the captaincy so he gets the farewell tour he rightfully deserves.

There are no real reasons why he shouldn’t be captain. There is no doubt that he can take control both on and off the field, just look at how he handled his troops during the Akermanis saga this season. At the same time he also proven time and time again that being skipper does not take away from his ability to play, as his heroic actions in the midfield was always highlighted week in and week out.

The players all respect him, even if they didn’t play alongside him, and leading the Lions to three consecutive premierships means that Voss can lead his troops into victory, time and time again.

Unlike most players, there was never a question about if you either like or hated Voss as a supporter, as he seemed to have the backing of almost everyone in the ground. A natural player, a natural captain, and most importantly, it is a great farewell testament to a great player of the game.

Listing his achievements and his ability to skipper the squad does not automatically mean he should get the job, but lets face facts, if the players selecting the captain had any real sense, they would see that this is the best option.

Personally to all the players in charge of selecting the captain, just remember this one little fact. After all his achievements both on and off the field that this champion has earned, there shouldn’t be any question that he deserves the captaincy. If not for the reasons above, just for the fact that it is a fitting farewell tribute to a true legend of the sport.

And to the rest of us supporters, I think that there is no doubt that Voss will be in charge during the two Tests in Ireland. And I for one cannot think of a better way for Michael Voss to leave the game other than leading his nation’s side out onto the field.

Until next time, sports minds.

He has been a great leader, and Lindsay Gilbee said in today's Age that he has learnt a lot from Voss by just being on the training track with him the last couple of days in the lead-up to the international rules series, which is a testament to Voss's leadership qualtiies.

That's exactly the point. I will vouch that i believe that even his opponents probably learnt a bit just by watching him play on the ground. He is a born leader
