The Weekend's Footy Finals Action
September 14th 2008 23:24
Well, haven't i been served a delicious helping of humble pie, with a side of semi-finals upset??!
I guess i had it coming. As Gus Gould would tell me ad nauseum, anything happens in finals football.
SportingMind inferred recently that Melbourne would easily account for the hapless Warriors in round one of the NRL finals, in fact taking the inference a step further by saying that Melbourne would simply have to turn up to claim victory. Pushing my luck even further, i mentioned that the halves combination of Witt and Fien probably wouldn't even be able to beat Melbourne even if they (Melbourne) did fail to turn up to the ground, such is my own good opinion. To my astonishment, Witt not only led his Warriors to a long-odds victory, he collected the Brut man of the match award and was heard to say in his acceptance of the award:
"Thanks to Brut, Channel 9, and SportingMind - you can go and get stuffed !! Warriors 08, yeah!!!"
If Melbourne can't beat the Warriors at home in the first round of the finals, then i doubt whether they can come back from this massive upset to even figure in the grand final this year. Whilst SportingMind is a steadfast Raiders supporter and was obviously barracking for a Melbourne victory that would keep the Raiders hopes alive, a malicious part of me wanted to see Cameron Smith lose a finals match - head in hands - despondent at the fact that finally, something hadn't gone his way.
I think the reason i hate Melbourne is simply because of Cameron Smith. As a hooker he is boring, uninspiring, and constantly trying to claim penalties by running at the second marker (note - just because you run at the second marker doesn't mean you will automatically get a penalty, although most referees can be decieved this way) and "stealing" 10 metres, thus reaffirming his position as world's greatest dummy half. I just don't like him. Another thing about him is that he doesn't seem to be a very happy man, in fact he is constantly brooding, which doesn't endear him to me either. However if i had to shave 3 times a day (including during the half-time interval) then i'd probably be pissed off as well.
It truly was a heartbreaking weekend for SportingMind. Not only did the Swans lose on Friday night, turning in an outrageously lacklustre effort which only reinforced the need for drastic personnel changes next year, but all my other teams lost as well. Canberra lost to the Sharks, the Wallabies went down to NZ in the Bledisloe and as mentioned before, the Warriors accounted for Melbourne.
In breaking news, three NRL players are being investigated over an alleged sexual assault which occurred during the weekend in Brisbane. However police are considering dropping all charges in the spirit of "Mad Monday" celebrations, with QLD Police Chief Michael Shields quoted as saying,
"These boys have had a hard season on the field, so its their every right to go and blow off a bit of steam once the season is over."
Shields then went on to use the old adage,
"Boys will be boys, won't they now? (laughing)".
