Sporting Minds Australian Sporting Moment of 2006 - The Finalists
December 22nd 2006 10:29
Well it that time again, the time where everyone thinks about relaxing with family, enjoying a small yet well deserved break, and above all, a time where the biggest moments of all categories are listed for no apparent reason!
Well this is your chance to actually be a part of this countdown. I present to you the first annual;
Sporting Mind's Australian Sporting Moment of 2006
How is this different from the countless other lists floating around at the moment? Absolutely nothing! Well one small thing, you get to vote for your favourite moment of 2006.
I have organised eleven finalists (eleven just to make it a bit more interesting), which are in no particular order. They are;
Melbourne Cup’s Japan 1, 2
Kerryn McCann winning the Commonwealth Games marathon against Hellen Cherono Koskei
Australia Opals winning the basketball world championships
The Mundine- Green fight
Socceroos’ 2-1 defeat of Japan in their opening World Cup game
West Coast Eagles defeating the Sydney Swans by a single point in the AFL Grand Final
Jason Gillespe’s 201 not out batting against Bangladesh
Australia storming back in the final day to win the 2nd Ashes Test in Adelaide
WILDCARD
Socceroos’ loss to Italy in the World Cup
Sydney Swifts recording a unbeaten season in the Commonwealth Bank Netball
Queensland’s comeback in State of Origin 3 to win the series
Each finalist will be judged on its importance to their sport, the popularity of the sport, the media coverage of the event, the reach the sport has on a national or international level, and the potential historic relevance the event might have.
Plus one more factor, the reader’s vote. The event with the most votes will be in a great position to take away the top position. Also I have left a wildcard spot for one more suggestion, so if you truly believe that one event has not been mentioned, feel free to suggest it and if you get enough support, it might become number one!
As they say, it’s now in your hands. Think of it like Australian Idol, except it doesn’t suck. Get voting, as it closes on the 29th.
Have your say in what is declared the inaugural Sporting Mind's Australian Sporting Moment for 2006!
Until next time, sports minds.

Being a rugby league boy, I am going to surprise everyone and vote for the Ausralian Opals first, the Socceroo's loss second and the Mundine-Green fight third.
I went for the Opals beacuse finally an international team beat the cocky Americans at their own game, whilst also ensuring that women's basketball in Australia finally gained some deserved recognition (and add to that the legend and exploits of Lauren Jackson - not enough Aussies realise what a briliant athlete we have in Lauren, someone who has acheived practically everything there is to achieve in her chosen profession, and now also wants to take on the men in the NBA - Good luck Lauren!).
The Socceroo's were a close second, in that there courageous performances won the heart of many novice Australian soccer supporters, while also lifting the profile of the sport in our homeland. The A-League may not have had the most successful season financially, but crowds on average were up and the FFA were able to land a $130 million deal with FOXTEl, which will ensure the growing success of the sport in Australia.
And lastly the Mundine-Green grudge match was a personal highlight for me, as even though I was cheering for Green, I fouund some renewed respect and admiration for Munidine as an ATHLETE. I know the guy should probably keep his mouth shut at times, but the way he slowly dismantled everything that Green threw at him, showed his patience and courage as a boxer.
There you go, that's me done,
