Secret Meeting Show Hints Of Gold Coast Kangaroos
April 18th 2007 03:33
With hints of massive conspiracy, the AFL last night organised a secret meeting with a number of league bigwigs and key shareholders with the Kangaroos in discussion of the club.
As no real news has emerged from the meeting, rumours are flying around that the AFL discussed buying the club, and as a result would mean that the Kangaroos would be shifted to the Gold Coast for financial reasons.
The conspiracy is more intriguing on the fact that the club’s biggest shareholder, Peter de Rauch who owns one million of the club four million shares, was not invited to the meeting. De Rauch has been the biggest shareholder of the club and has been a staunch advocate in keeping the club in Melbourne.
All the pieces fit that the club are considering a move for the Kangaroos to the Gold Coast, but as many fans of the club and the league have discovered this has been a move long in the making, and personally they should make the move sooner rather than later.
The original side, the North Melbourne Kangaroos, has not been known as that for over five years. With just the name of the Kangaroos, they have been a club without a home for a long time.
And for all the Kangaroos supporters, lets face facts we are the club that needs to move. Like the two previous clubs that have either merged or moved from Melbourne (South Melbourne became the Sydney Swans in the 80s, and the Fitzroy Lions merged with the Brisbane Bears in the ‘90s) the Kangaroos side has not have the success either financially or on the field for a long time.
Whilst the Kangaroos were the kings of the league in the ‘70s and the late ‘90s, they have not tasted any success in almost a decade. From that the club has experienced financial losses, and with the fact that less and less fans are becoming members every year, it seems that they are becoming the Titantic side of the AFL, destined to sink.
Moving to the Gold Coast is a great idea. First of all, the potential sponsorship and increasing member sales would boost the club dramatically. And secondly, it would give the club the advantage it needs. If you look at the clubs around Australia not based in Melbourne, they are all boosting membership numbers, and are the strong sides in the competition as they have the tap into the local talent before anyone really can have a look in.
I know how hard it is for some fans to think about their club packing up and moving states, but it is what’s best for the club. As an AFL supporter, and indeed a Kangaroos member, I know how impossible it is to consider this option. My family has had a long history with the North Melbourne club, but as it is blatantly obvious to see. Personally I would prefer to see the club in another state than being just a stat in the history of the competition.
Until next time, sports minds.
