MLB going big with contracts
December 7th 2010 00:45
Christmas has come about a month early for some of the elite players of
major league baseball. As we watch the big numbers roll in it is no wonder that young children have the dreams they have of bscoming a big athletic star. One of the biggest surprises to me was the contract that the Washington Nationals handed over to Jayson Werth for his signature. Hold on to your hat while I give you the numbers. He inked a 7 year 126 million dollar deal. This comes to about 18 million a year. This is not a bad contract for someone 32 years old. It was hard for me to believe that the Nationals paid out this kind of money. Jayson Werth will be 39 years old when this deal is done. Sure there could be a couple of arguments made for giving over this much money to someone at 32 years of age. Jason is one of the better outfielder in the game today and he is a proven playoff tested player. It almost seems that one thing for sure in MLB, it is going to cost to stay competetive. The Nationals are not the only one forking out big bucks, the Yanksees just shelled out 51 million for Jeter but this is something they are used to. The Yankees have a much thicker wallet than most of the teams in MLB. Derek Jeter's deal is worth 51 million over 3 years. This deal also comes with a player option for the forth year that could be worth another 8 million dollars or 9 million with performance based incentives. By the time these contracts are up these guys should be well ready for retirement. I know I would be! The Boston Red Sox have been reported as having a preliminary aqgrrement to sign Adrian Gonzales to a & year 154 million dollar extension. The Rockies are going to shell out 16 million a year for Troy Tulowizki. It seems these days if you are going to be in the game it is going to cost you! I am sure that the next few days will bring some more free agents to the bank with some of the contracts that are still in the works. So set back and listen to the cha chinging going on in the world of MLB in the upcoming days. Get ready to dig deep in that wallet for the tickets, beer, hot dogs, popcorn,
