Kosima Out For Four, and Double Standard Rife

October 18th 2006 14:45

As the farce that was the Adelaide vs Melbourne game, it was the Adelaide coach John Kosima who has been hit the hardest from it all.

After being all ejected from the technical area after grabbing Victory midfielder Kevin Muscat by the throat, and earning an automatic one game ban, the FFA has given him a further punishment of four extra games and a monetary fine.

Now this is a very technical issue to define, but even to a semi – unbiased person such as myself I cannot believe the amount of double standards that are arising.

First of all, they reviewed the situation for Kosima, but decided that because Muscat was given a yellow card during the game they cannot review his case even further. It must be pointed out that Kosima was given an automatic punishment by being ejected of the the technical area, yet his punishment was up for review.

Second of all, both people involved should be dealt with, even due to their past history and how they acted. Muscat, who is by far not known as a ‘well-behaved’ player at the best of times, essentially ran into Kosima to retrieve the ball. Whilst Kosima, who has instructed his team to delay the game by any means necessary, and was certainly not rushing to return the ball, was quick to anger and viciously grab Muscat by the throat. By image of course Kosima looked worse off, but that whole incident had to be looked in context.

Finally, even with the comment I am certain to receive, yes Muscat was only given a yellow card and therefore was technically not able to have his punishment reviewed by the FFA. But if Kosima received such a harsh punishment, even though rightfully deserved, then Muscat should be in the same league.

This argument will definitely split party lines. If you believe Kosima was punished rightly or was given a severe blow by the FFA is not the discussion, but rather how it did not extend to both parties involved. I am a true believer in what is good for the goose is good for the gander, and in this case Muscat missed out of having his goose cooked by the skin of his teeth.

Until next time, sports minds.
