Greg "Shark" Norman vs Mr "Big"
July 22nd 2008 03:19
First of all i must apologise to my legions of readers, who in their thousands have been emailing me, wondering why on earth there have been so few blogs in recent times? SportingMind takes full responsibility for his actions, and promises to uphold the good name of orble.com in the future. Much like a disgraced footballer, i have no one to blame but myself - thus i promise to change my ways for the better.
Whilst the nation held their collective breath as Greg Norman went into the final round at the British Open in the lead by 2 shots; I instead exhaled heartily, confident in the fact that a sleepless night of watching the "Shark" fumble his way around a golf course that he had dominated the previous 3 days was as sure a bet as a punt on Israel Folau as first try-scorer. Yet many Australians braved the late night to get exactly what they deserved, a mascohistic lesson; that being that the Shark is going to hurt you, no matter how many times you support him to the death.
Like Carrie from Sex and the City would tell you, men don't change. Norman is the "Mr Big" of golf. With his snazzy, tailored outfits, tanned skin and leathery expressions, Norman exudes a confidence that slightly obscures his one huge frailty as a golfer. Norman is the kind of guy who will waltz into a nightclub (metaphor for a golf course), win the approval of everyone in the said club, and go home with the hot, hard-to-get female, (not a direct metaphor for Chris Evert). Yet he will let her down through some minor flaw - perhaps he is unable to commit to a relationship. Perhaps he has an STD of some description. Or perhaps he simply can't get it up.
This metaphor of Norman appearing to be the perfect man/golfer, is apt in this writer's opinion, because Norman promises so much, yet delivers so little. Like Mr Big, he can't change (regardless of what the famed Movie told us). Norman will always choke on the final round. It is what he does, and don't try to change him. The catharsis that the Sex and the City movie provided so many women across the globe was unquestionable, yet die-hard Norman fans should look for that happy ending elsewhere. Coz it ain't coming in the form of another Major. Just be happy for the Shark and his new bride as they enjoy their honeymoon period, synonymous with young love.
Let him be himself, and appreciate him for what he is. An exquisite striker of the ball, a brilliant long iron player, a great "clutch" putter, and a very wealthy man. But with one Major flaw. Pun intended.

Well as they say hindsight is a beautiful thing and while the Shark couldn't rewrite his chapter in the history of golf as the greatest choker there ever was, at least if only for a brief moment he revived interest in the sort in AUS! Something the so-called current crop of champions can't seem to manage, tell me who would've stayed up to watch Adam "personality of a sloth" Scott or Geoff "who?" Oglivey...

May i add that the Sex and the City analogy in this blog was a shameless attempt to increase my female audience, which is currently standing at zero.
