Greg Bird's "Arrest"

June 13th 2008 01:38
As if the 30-0 humiliation of Origin II wasn't enough for NSW, an interesting aftermath was the surprise "arrest" of 5/8 Greg Bird in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Queensland police decided to have a little fun with our 'favourite' son, after Bird had decided to spread his wings and celebrate his brilliant game with a few celebratory drinks.

As quoted in today's SMH; "Bird then asked police outside the bar where he could find a taxi. They handcuffed him and forced him to sit in the back of their car for about five minutes before releasing him and telling him it was a practical joke as a large crowd of onlookers started chanting, 'Free Bird'."

This poses several questions. Firstly; Bird was out at 4.30 a.m? Shouldn't this be an issue of some kind? After all, he does have a game on the weekend (Sharks v Warriors - Sat nite). But then again, Bird has every right to toast the 22 effective tackles that he made in the match, a truly commendable effort.

Secondly; shouldn't the police be allowed to exercise a little bit of jocular derision? Bird is on their turf, drinking in a Queensland pub, at the ungodly hour of 4.30 a.m. I see no reason why the Qld police and the pub patrons can't have a little bit of a giggle at Bird's expense. After all, this is Origin - state against state. This should include the state police.

Thirdly; can't Bird find a taxi? What qualifies the police to know where the cabs will be at 4.30 a.m. Is there a secret spot where cabs come that only Origin stars are entitled to know of its existence?

Fourthly; shouldn't Bird just get a sense of humour? The Qld supporters rallied around the car, like a herd of ravenous locusts, chanting "Free Bird", which made for a terrific spectacle. I know that if i saw a footballer being publicly humiliated i would have found it hilarious. Bird should understand that this is just Origin theatrics - and he should oblige by allowing himself to be publicly humiliated and dacked in front of a crowd of pissed, redneck freaks - for lack of an alternatively suitable post-match show.

This incident is sure to provoke a response from the NSW police force after Origin III (in Sydney). My money is on Michael Crocker being arrested in a kebab shop on Darlinghurst Street for asking for extra tabouli. A riot squad will be called and shots will be fired - yet we'll write off the whole event as a bit of a harmless giggle.

During Origin matches the host state should become a police state - allowing complete social control over opposition Origin players. This would have happened under Joh Bjelke-Petersen, so why not today? SportingMind asserts that there is nothing wrong with the patronization of footballers by the state police. In fact it should be encouraged at all times, and may even possibly serve as a deterrent in keeping pissed footballers off the streets and out of the headlines. Forget club-imposed curfews or total drinking bans - let the players drink and stay out as late as they want. But lets give the police complete authority to poke fun at the idiots while they do so. Dismantling their ego's is the most effective weapon in fighting the binge-drinking habits of deadshit footballers.
