Fremantle Continue To Circle the Drain, As Farmer Causes More Chaos

July 19th 2007 15:07
In a week that the Fremantle Dockers will be yearing to forget quickly, another massive roadblock has hit the western club as their star forward and prominent ‘bad boy’ Jeff Farmer is once again in trouble with the police of criminal vandalism.

Farmer, who earlier in the year was suspended from the club due to being involved in an altercation with a bouncer whilst intoxicated, was reportedly involved with damage to a car in front of a Perth nightspot earlier this week. Today the police questioned Farmer over the incident, and after the interview was charged with damage to the vehicle.

This latest incident is one that has seriously become a dangerously large list that the Dockers have had to handle. From missing training to constant penalties on the field, to even more serious assault and public drunkiness charges off-field. Whilst Farmer has been able to wow the crowds when wearing the purple jumper, it has been a constant headache for the administration the entire time.

On top of all this, there is no doubt that the incident could not come at a worse time for Fremantle. After their dramatic four point loss to the Kangaroos on Sunday, they were essentially bundled out of finals contention after being touted as pre-season favourites earlier this year. During the week, where the constant pressure on the future of the coach Chris Connolly forced him to quit from his position, the talks about how the club would be able to cope with such a drastic turn-around at a pinnacle point of the season.

Now with this Farmer fiasco on their hands, it can be said that the Dockers are at the stage of officially tanking in the 2007 season. When they needed the squad, and the club to band together to keep their strength intact, they have begun to fall apart at the seams. Whilst it is no surprise that Farmer has once again caused chaos whilst on a night on, the result may mean that the club might have to cut loose the draining energy of the club.

After this recent fiasco, the Dockers will definitely have to look seriously at tearing up Farmer’s contract. In this year alone he has been the biggest headache for the Dockers bar their performance issues, and the club took the hard stance against him previously when he was suspended for six weeks after the bouncer incident.

With that case alone, the magistrate who charged Farmer said that he was ‘on his last legs’ and the Dockers were taking that to heart until now. With this new police charge against him, they have little to no options. Fremantle are seriously circling the drain, and they must rectify all that is wrong with the club before it sends them down the path of failure. With a new coach coming into the fold either next year or from next week (if the talk of assistant and now caretaker coach Harvey taking the position are founded), the club must strike now to be able to have a clean slate going into the ’08 season. Whilst the Dockers are still mathematically possible in making the finals this year, the Connolly and Farmer saga has seriously placed their side at a league standstill. And there will be no doubt that unless Fremantle make sure all their decisions made right now will benefit them in the future, they could cause more damage than good for their side. Beforehand it was considered their coach who was holding them back, and right now it is considered to be the ‘bad boy’ of the squad. One has gone and another is out the door, and in regards to the Dockers the sooner they clean the slate of everything that has held them back this season, the better.

Until next time, sports minds.
