Another Week in Sport..

July 7th 2008 02:26
Another thrilling and controversial week in sport has just elapsed, with some dynamic performances in all sporting codes. So let's have a brief, superficial glance at what made headlines this weekend.

Firstly; the Swans vs Collingwod game. Never will i watch another Swans v Collingwood encounter at ANZ Stadium, as an underwhelming Swans team yet again fell victim to the "Collywobbles". Lacking any spark out of midfield, and struggling to close down on the small, yet elusive Collingwood forward line, it was the Swans forward line that deserved the most criticism, completely unable to make the most of goal opportunities.

Barry Hall looks like he may be in some danger of being (yet again) suspended, this time with a stray elbow missing its intended mark. Whilst the high shot may have missed the diving Shane Wakelin, Hall actions still have the Prima Facie evidence that he was again trying to make contact with an opponents head. Hopefully another lengthy stint on the sideline won't also involve 5-6 weeks of overly repentant, apologetic columns in the Herald - on how he has let his team mates done, how he needs to earn back respect, etc.

Watching the Raiders v Melbourne NRL match on Sunday afternoon, i was reminded again of how good the Storm really are. Their backline is ridiculously talented, with only one player (Cronk) not being an Origin starter (although if he was from NSW, he would be a certain starter). In comparison, the Raiders may be a solid group of individuals, but hardly household names. Meanwhile the Eels v Penrith 'local derby' ended in controversy, with allegations of racism against prop Petero Civoniceva. The gutsy win to the Panthers side culminated in the Eels crowd directing racism at Petero; with Petero saying:

"It was just disappointing. You cop abuse all the time off fans but, fortunately, most people are educated enough not to resort to that sort of stuff.

That's right Petero, most people are educated enough. But not those who attend league matches at Parramatta stadium. Eels fans are the worst of all fans in the NRL, and these patrons need to be named and shamed - ideally by Derryn Hinch. It is really disappointing that there are still people out there with such overtly racist principles, and almost impossible to believe that such an innocuous workman-style player like Petero could even draw any sort of said criticism from fans.

Media darlings Eamon Sullivan and Stephanie Rice shocked the conservative wing of Australia with their daring photo shoot advertisement for underwear manufacturers Davenport. Isn't it lovely to see a young couple so in love? It just re-affirms everything that is good in the world. Meanwhile, SportingMind nearly choked on his waffles when informed that gangland spouse Roberta Williams had revealed mostly all for men's rag "Zoo Weekly". But who am i to play Moral Crusader, in fact its probably about time that young Roberta was subject to a slightly different form of beating (pardon the innuendo).

Moving right along to the Wallabies victory over France on Saturday night, and it seems that the Deans juggernaut is continuing, even to the point where John "Knuckles" Connolly wrote a very moving testimonial in the Herald in praise of Robbie Deans coaching - but reminding us all that the Tri-Nations is the real test for the Deans-led Wallabies. Typical of Knuckles to bring us back down to earth after such a euphoric and unexpected win against a more than capable French outfit. Knuckles of course made headlines recently when he filed a letter to the ARU demanding a $40,000 performance incentive fee, claiming the Wallaby victories against Japan and other strong outfits in the recent World Cup were not appropriately recognised. Well done Knuckles, but it might be time for you to fade away gracefully. Maybe go and coach a Shute Shield team and give something back to the game that you seem to be taking a lot away from these days.

Lastly, the epic 5 hour Nadal v Federer match ended in an upset, with Mowgli from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book ousting the robotic, T1000 Federer, ending the Federer dynasty and earning the Spaniard his first Wimbledon title. SportingMind didn't stay up for the match, but from what i caught on Larry Emdur's "The Morning Show", it certainly was a blockbuster. Kudos to Mowgli.

Stay tuned for the next wrap up of the week in sport..
