Great College football on 12/30

December 31st 2010 13:43

After all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Holiday I finally got to sit down unwind and watch some bowl games on Thursday. I thought they were very entertaining and stood for what NCAA football is all about. Just like any other saturday in the NCAA there were surprises and controversy. In the Armed Forces Bowl secon year coach Rich Ellerson Led Army to their first winning season since 1996 with a 16-14 win over SMU. Josh McNary scooped up a fumble and returned it for 55 yards for a touchdown to help seal the victory for the Black Knights. The first Pinstripe Bowl which was played between Syracuse and Kansas State was a very exciting sluggfest. RB Delone Carter rushed for a carrer high 198 yards and 2 TD's for Syracuse. Daniel Thomas rushed for TD's for Kansas St. In the end Syracuse came out on top 36-34 but not after some controversy. Adrian Hilburn slipped a tackle and raced to a 30-yard touchdown catch with 1:13 remaining to pull Kansas State within two. Hilburn saluted the crowd behind the visitor’s dugout and was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct, which pushed the 2-point conversion attempt back to the 17-yard line. After the failed attempt Syracuse went own to victory. Excessive celebration REALLY! North Caroline deafeted Tennessee in the Music City Bowl 30-27 in double ot in a wild finish. The game was first called over after mass confusion on the field with NC trying to spike the ball with time running out in regulation. The refs called the game over and Tenn. begin their celebration. In a wild turn of events their was a penalty flag on the field. NC was called with too many men on the field and pentalized. This give NC a shot at the field goal which was good and tied the game sending it to overtime. The refs had claimed that their was one second left on the clock. NC went on to win in ot. The same thing happened to Tenn. earlier in the year at LSU which give LSU a shot at the winning td with no time on the clock. Wow what luck! Finally the last game of the evening was the Holiday Bowl where Washington defeated Nebraska. Jake Locker bounced back from an injury he said looked worse than it was, scoring on a 25-yard run in the third quarter to help Washington to a 19-7 victory No. 17 Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday night. This was a great day of NCAA footbal that only led me to rest up so I can watch the rest of the bowl season games!

Cam Newton AP player of the year

December 23rd 2010 16:26

Cogatulations to Cam Newton. After everything this young man has been through he has acomplished a great deal this year. After winning the Heisman, Davey Obrien, and Maxwell Awards cam will add another to his awsome resume. He was voted AP Player of The Year. He recived 51 votes from 60 member AP football panel. Look for him in the BCS Championship game against Oregon on Jan. 10 2011. At 6' 6" and 250 pounds he is a big threat weather he passes or runs the ball. This promises to be an exciting game with lots of action. If you love college football this will be the game to see. Good luck Cam and bring the BCS Championship back to the SEC again! Go Auburn!

Boise over Utah in MAACO Bowl.

December 23rd 2010 16:15

When this game first started I didn't know if it was bowl game jitters or if Boise was still thinking abiut the loss to Nevada that took them out of the BCS race. they really stared out flat with to turnovers that Utah could not capitalize on that could have changed the game drasically in their favor. After all was said and done tenth Boise finally put it together they pulled out a 26-3 win over twentieth rankes Utah. Kellen Moore ended up 28-38 for 339 yards with 2 TD's and 1 INT Doug martin helped in the cause with a 84 yard run up the middle. Boise finished up their second season with only 1 loss. I was really looking for them to put up more points than they did just to end their year with a statement. They were 16 point favorite coming in to this game and covered. If they hadn't started with such a sluggish start it would probably would have been by a bigger margin. Look for this slow start in a lot of bowl games because some of these teams are off almost a month before thay play. Aurburn and Oregon are off almost 6 weeks before they play the BCS championship game. I am sure that this layoff effects teams in the longrun.

Jet's coach tripping Miami player

December 14th 2010 11:33

There were a lot of bazzar things that went on in week 14 but none as freaky as the one that I wittnessed myself. Jet's strenght coach Sal Alosi pulled one of the biggest bonehead moves that I have seen in a long, long time. He tripped Miami cornerback Nolan Carroll as he was comlng down the sideline. You can clearly se on the pictures and videos that this was a blatant move on Alosi's part. He had his hands in his pockets but you can clearly see that he moved his knee to make contact with Caroll. This is not the example we want our kids to see on the sidelines. At a Monday news conference Alosi appologized in a statement from Jets headquarters. He appologized to Coach Tony Sporano and Jet's owner Woody Johnson. This didn't matter much because the NFL did what it should have done and suspended Sal Alosi. theNFL also fined him $25,000 which is as far as I am conscerned is a light punishment. The NFL is trying their best to keep players from injuring one another when they started fining player for the hits that have been made. Do they have to keep an eye on the coaches now? Give this coach a huge ass hat to sit on his head!!!!!

Brett Favre's streak ends at 297!

December 13th 2010 23:42

Brett Favre has been declared inactive for tonights game against the Giants ending hie consecutive starting streak at 297. With a record of 5-7 it was to risky for Brett to try to start tonights game. Could we have seen him play his last game? With only three games left and a record of 5-7 the brett Favre era could be over. I am pretty sure that he will retire after this season is over with. Living close to his Hattisburg, Miss. home Ibecame a Farve fan when he was QB at Southern Mississippi. He has been a strong competetor for years. He has always been a joy to watch. His never quit attitude brught a special toch to every game he played. With the rewarding career that he had I would have loved him to finish this year strong. I really hate to see him go out on a dissapointing losing season but everything has an ending. Every era must come to an end just like the Marino, Montanna,Bradshaw and many other great QB's over the years. One thing that Favre will always be remebered for is the fact that he was not scared to take chances Both physically and mentally. I would like to take this opportunity to congatulate Brett Favre on an unbeilivable run. Passing for 507 touchdowns and passing for miles about 44 to be exact, it is not going to be the same if you are a Farve fan. I hope that before this season ends that his shoulder will heal up enough for Favre to make his final curtain call. As a football fan I am going to miss #4 walking out on the field. Once again congratuletions on an unbeilivable and incredible run in the NFL!

LHSAA STATE CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPS

December 12th 2010 13:32

I would like to take this opportunity to give a shout out to the Franklinton,La High School Demons for their win over Karr to take the Louisiana class 4a state championship. Saturday in the Loisiana Superdome the Fighting Demons of Franklinton, La. finally brought home the gold. This was the first state title for Franklinton. It took three trips to the finals to finallt seal the championship. They were in the state finals in 1981,2009, and finally winning in 2010. Under the direction of Terrance Magee who is a LSU commitment the Demons won a very entertaining game in overtime by a score of 34-28.This game was a back and forth battle the whole game. With Franklinton leading 28-20 with 26 seconds left in the game Karr scored a touchdown and made the two point conversion to send it to overtime. Karr got the ball first on overtime and fumbled the ball on their own 5 yard line. Franklinton recovered the fumble that put them first and goal on the 8 yard line. After a couple of failed passes to the endzone Franklinton took the ball to the 1 yard line on third down. This set up a 4 and goal on the one. Instead od kicking the field goal the Demons decide to go for it on fourth down. Franklinton running back Reggie Wilson took it in from there on a 1 yard run to give the Demons their first state title. This is exciting to me because this is my home town and where I graduated in 1980. Congratulation Demons on bringing the state title to Franklinton,La.

Cam Newton wins 2010 Heisman

December 12th 2010 02:54

Cam Newton capped of a huge week after winning the 2010 Heisman trophy by a landslide. After taking home three awards at Thursday night's NCAA Football awards he finally brings homethe big prize. With his father',s decision not to attend he graciously accepted the award with his mother buy his side. Regardless of what comes out of the allegations towards him and the decision the NCAA will still make he has had a great recorc setting year. Leading Auburn to an undefeated season and a chance to play for the national championship was no easy task. Anytime you go through the SEC undefeated you have acomplished a great task. After the Reggie Bush decision that was made by the NCAA let's hope that this decision is the right one. The Heisman trophy is one of the greatest accomplishments an athlete can make and this sacred award needs to be kept away from any controversy that would scare the integrity of this great award. With the SEC title, the Heisman and the other awards under his belt look for Cam Newton to make a great showing in the BCS Championship game. Look for a very entertaining game between Auburn and Oregon. Ther wilol be tons of talent on the field in this game. As an avid LSU fan I dread to see Cam return to Auburn his senior year but I think it will be the right decision if he does. I think that evryone learns from their mistakes and I am sure that Cam is no exception. Congratulations to Cam for winning the 2010 Heisman trophy. As for the BCS Championship game GO SEC!!!!!

How much is a shortstop really worth ?

December 2nd 2010 20:44

Keeping up with the Derek Jeter saga that is taking place with the Yankees made me ponder this thought. With Jeter holding out for more money the Yankees are not giving in. The last offer from the Yankees is a 3 year deal worth 45 million. He first asked for three year 63 million dollar contract. With the age that Jeter is aproaching I think the Yankees are doing the right thing by offering him a 3 year deal at 15 million a year. Just monday of this week the Colorado Rockies paid a whopping 16 million a year to Troy Tulowitzki. I think that if the Yankees come up with more money it will be the marketing potential that Jeter has and not based clearly on talent. After all the salary base that the Yankee's have is one of the strongest if not the strongest in the major leagues. Marketing is where a lot of the money comes from for these teams. I am an instuctor in a tachnical college and I se the Yankee caps, jerseys, etc. A lot has to come from marketing I believe because look at the stadiums when they show a baseball game. Do you notice the empty seats? The salary situation in pro sports is crazy. Where is the love from these athletes to their fans? We have to resort to following our favorite team from home because we can't afford the tickets. In closing I do realize that Jeter is a great player and is one of the mian faces of the Yankees and be it for me to criticize his abilities to make a very comforable living. He has worked hard to be able to stand down the Yankees in this situation. Final question , If the Yankees don't do it will someone else. Keep intouch amnd we will see the outcome together!

After all Cam Newton has been through with the recent allegations against him I ask a simple question. How much can a young player go through a remain focused like he has? It takes a lot to keep the focus on the task at hand without all the outside distractions. Last week in the Alabama game known as the Iron Bowl, he help to bring his team back from a 24-0 defecit to win the game. This really sealed the Heisman race for hoim inmy opinion. If i had a vote for heisman he would get my vote just for the way he has handled adversity. Without a doubt he is in my opinion the best college player onthe field today. Truly there are some questioable things in his past but everyone needs a chance to redeem himself. Look at what Michael Vic of the Eagles has done this year. I really look for Cam and Auburn to dominate the Gamecocks on saturday's SEC championship game. After all Auburn went undefeated a few years ago and was over looked for the BCS chamoinship game. Look for Auburn to take advantage of the opportunity this time around. One thing that we have to realize it was his dad that out him in this situation. I am behind this young man 100%. When we watch the SEC championship game I belive you can Look at teh leading Heisman candidate for 2010 to show why is isthe top candidate. It is a great joy to watch someone exceed when all things are against them! Good luck Cam!

A Sports fan's Thanksgiving!

December 1st 2010 02:24

Being an avid sports fan I love and watch all types of sports. My favorite sport is football. Living in Louisiana I am a huge Saints and LSU fan. One thing I like about Thanksgiving is the time after eating that big dinner and relaxing watching football. This year as we were preparing that fine feast it led me to a thought. The question that I begin to ponder filled my head with memories of the time of sports we have already experienced this year. Thank you Saints for bringing home the Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl XLIV. I have been waiting for this since I was a child old enough to watch football. The years of waiting till next year finally came to an end. A thank you for winning the World Series goes to the Giants. I am not a big Yankees fan anyway. 27 World Series appearances are enough for any team. What about Jeter? Where would baseball be without these faces in baseball? Thanks to Les Miles for another unforgettable season. 9 wins and 1 loss, who would have guessed where we would be ranked at this point of the year, LSU has a #5 ranking in the BCS and controls their own destiny as to where they end up in bowl play. Thank you Brett Favre for another episode filled beginning to another season. We follow him every week just to see what transpires each week. It may because we just don’t want to let him go. But if you have the same opinion as I it is time for him to move on. Thanks to the Dallas Cowboys leading us to wonder if this is really America’s team or not. What a start for them. They seem to have it turned around since the firing of Wade Phillips. What about the Randy Moss drama? What about the Brett Favre scandal? We have a lot of sports gossip on going around the dinner table. One of the biggest things I am thankful for is the BCS mess. The BCS boggle gives us plenty to look forward to each week as the quest for the BCS Championship goes on. Thank you for NFL football on Thanksgiving Day so we can recline with a very full stomach and be sorry the rest of the day. Thank you NCAA for the upcoming conference championship games and the upcoming bowl season. As you can see as sports fans we have a lot to be thankful for on this wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. GEAUX TIGERS!!!!
