Sporting Mind - August 2010

Week 2 of English Premier League

August 21st 2010 11:51
The big story from last week was the goal scoring of Chelsea against West Brom. If they can put up some big numbers again against Blackpool, they have made a believer out of me that they are going to be unstoppable in the league. Manchester United only put up 3 goals against a lowly Newcastle and Liverpool and Arsenal could barely put each other away. It should be interesting to see Drogba and Maluda become the 1 and 2 scorers for Chelsea and that would leave them to sell Anelka especially after his antics during the World Cup to the highest bidder. These are just some ideas. In my eyes, there shouldn't be any new surprises from the English this week as I am expecting the same teams to dominate and destroy to further seperate the big four and the rest of the group.

Favre...Again

August 19th 2010 22:17
A few weeks ago I wrote about how Favre was retiring again and maybe we can put all of his summer antics away and never have to hear about him again until he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. BUT NO...he has to come back again so I have to deal with him again next summer. I have a feeling that I am going to be in my 40s when Favre retires in 14 more years. How much does he need to feel needed since it took 3 Viking players to fly down to Mississippi to fetch him to come back to Minnesota. Is his ego that large that he needs to feel like the most important person in the entire world? My guesses are that he is. He might be the nicest guy and best teammate but he needs to stop making my summer horrible since every story is about whether or not he will retire. Make your decision in April before the draft and I won't care as much.

Preseason?

August 17th 2010 11:37
Should there even be a NFL preseason? I have to say no on this argument. First off, the owners still charge people the same price for the tickets to see mostly back ups and people they are going to cut for most of the game. All of the starters are out of the game by end of the first quarter anyways. Also, players like Tomlinson in the past haven't even played one snap in the preseason in order to save themselves for the rest of the season. The number of injuries that happen during these fake games are astronomical and they should be reduced to maybe only two games instead of four. The question is do we raise the number of regular season games from 16 to 18 to take its place. My answer to this is if the owners still want the same amount of games altogether then go for the extra two games even though many more records will be shattered due to the extra seasonal games. If we keep the way it is and just eliminate the two games I am fine with that or lower the amount of money for those tickets and then play the back ups. Either way, I hate watching preseason fake football games.

Waiting for the Explosion

August 16th 2010 01:31
When will Chad Ochocinco explode when he realizes that Carson Palmer has thrown many more balls to Terrell Owens than to him? This is getting interesting since this is the guy who fought to have T.O. on the team thinking that they would double team him and leave Ochocinco open to have more passes and receptions. I think we might have a civil war in the Bengals locker room by Week 10 and this will make things much more interesting to watch this year. Considering how well this offense is, they have been lacking in the amount of yards and production that was predicted that they would get. We shall soon find out what will happen between these two players. At least this is more interesting than the indecesion of Brett Favre.

Chelsea Is The Real Deal

August 15th 2010 15:47
The match yesterday between West Brom and Chelsea was one of the most lopsided victories I have seen in a few years except for the North Korea blowout by Portugal. The first half was a little sluggish with Chelsea cruising to a 2 goal advantage, however, the play of the Blues were amazing and exceeded my expectations of exactly how well the champions are playing. Drogba seems to be on the same path as last year in which he might win the Golden Boot as Malouda finally seems to overtaken Anelka as the second striker on this star studded team.

Granted, Chelsea was playing West Brom who were in the Champions League last year and was one of my original picks to be knocked right back down in there, however, last year on opening day, Everton lost 5-0 in their opening game with Tim Howard in goal who may be one of the best goaltenders in the English leagues. Needless to say, I want to see how well Chelsea will play against tougher competition of an Arsenal and Liverpool before I can really make any sound judgements from right now stating that they might be one of the best teams in Europe. Let's see how Manchester United plays tomorrow against Newcastle United if there is the same result of a 6-0 win.

Are You Ready For Some Futbol?

August 13th 2010 12:19
After the great month of watching constant soccer just about every day, the English Barclay's Premier League is about to begin for another action packed season. Last year's winner, Chelsea, has already lost the Community Shield to Manchester United already starting a matchup that I can not wait to see again. New transfers for Manchester City, especially the new one of Mario Balotelli, will literally help transform Manchester City into the top four most likely knocking out Liverpool from these rankings. Can Chelsea make it three in a row? Will Wayne Rooney win the player of the year? Will Newcastle United be forced down again to the Coca-Cola League? All of it starts on Saturday which I am excited to watch once again. Early predictions....

Top Four: Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City

USA...USA...USA..OUCH

August 12th 2010 02:48
After the herorics of Landon Donovan and the rest of the US soccer team during the World Cup, the match last night with Brazil's Junior Varsity squad was very disappointing. So disappointing that I deleated my recording of the match before even watching the entire game. I had heard what the score was and then saw some of the highlights on ESPN and was very happy that I did not tune in to watch the entire game. This might be the end of Bob Bradley in which I hope Maradona's ban in the US ends so at least we can watch the antics of that Argentinian. I really hoped that soccer would pick up the pace after the World Cup. I guess for now I am very wrong.

Hit Him With Your Best Shot

August 11th 2010 10:49
Violence in sports? It seems like that is all that was being talked about last night between the Cards and the Reds. Ironically, I believe that violence and fighting in sports is actually normal and a part of the game. Fighting in hockey has been happening for decades. Going after the opposing team in baseball is just as good as anything else. Plus, I actually find the fighting entertaining (only when it is not any of my favorite players or teams since suspensions happen). I am only bringing up this subject since 4 people last night called me to go onto ESPN and watch how entertaining it was to see Carpenter get thrown up against a fence and Molina and Phillips going at it. Everyone remembers a great fight and not who has won the World Series five years ago. For example, Ventura vs. Ryan, Pedro vs. Don Zimmer, Joey Porter vs. the entire team. Needless to say, I love watching a good fight and the one last night was a very good fight!

Sunday Night Quarterback

August 9th 2010 01:45
As promised, I did watch the first quarter of the Bengals-Cowboys game. I was very disappointed in the Bengals for not showing more of a display of offense with the wide reciever grouping of T.O. and Ochocinco. I was actually looking forward this game all weekend only to come to the realization that the Gamer-Famer game before this one was much more entertaining. Even the Cowboys offense looked lackluster as the offensive line could not contain the Bengals defense. In fact, I think the two defenses looked the best out of all of the sides in the entire game. Hopefully, the regular season will look better out of these two offenses that many including myself believe that these are easily two Super Bowl contenders. Shame Hard Knocks isn't focused on the Bengals this year since it would have been great to see how T.O. and Ochocinco will handle each other.

On a side note, can any other football analyst/ESPN show go one whole show without mentioning Brett Favre and how he is the "best" quarterback ever. I know I can name five that are better than him within the last 20 years. So tired of hearing about it. It is like those old school muscians that continue to have farewell tours and never go away. Cher and The Who I am looking at you.

Are You Ready For Some Football?

August 8th 2010 13:46
Tonight is the first preseason game for the 2010 football season between the Bengals and Cowboys. I will probably only watch the first quarter anyway since I really want to to see what antics Ochocinco and T.O. can possibly give us. I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being the Superbowl matchup this year in fact if my own teams that I support do not make the playoffs I would love to see these two teams in the Superbowl just for the entertainment they would give us during the game. At least it has to be better than the lackluster halftime shows they have given us since the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. Tune in tomorrow for the complete Monday Morning analysis of this first preseason game.

About Time

August 7th 2010 12:18
How hard is it to run 2 shuttle runs? Albert Haynesworth of the Washington Redskins finally completed his conditioning test. I watched Mike Golic the other day take the same test as a 47 year old and completly dominate in which Haynesworth was more like Haynesworthless as he is just sitting on the sidelines. He is one of the highest payed defensive linemen in the league and he can't even complete a shuttle run until 4 or 5 times trying, I wouldn't even start him in any of the games and make a point that he really is worthless to the team. I have a lot of respect now for Shannahan for sticking to his guns and making an example of him to the rest of the football world showing how much of an ego many of these athletes have. I happen to coach high school athletes and I really wonder where that transition begins from being a coachable kid to an egomaniac.

Any ideas?

600*

August 6th 2010 14:27
For many who were not aware, A-Rod hit his 600th homerun. It only took 12 games of ESPN to cut away from whatever was on in order to watch every single ab live. This reminded me of when Barry Bonds was shooting for the all time record. I am not sure how exactly to say this but when was it alright for us to care about any players breaking milestones while taking performance enhancing drugs? Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of the milestones to begin with. Obviously they have an advantage of the few who followed the rules and did not take performance enhancing drugs. The cover of the New York papers were priceless as they congratulated A-Rod on his tainted milestone. Hopefully we won't have to endure all of this when A-Rod goes for his 700th homerun.

Favre Does It Again

August 5th 2010 06:35
Once again, Brett Favre is still undecided after all indications were pointed yesterday that he was leaving football "forever". Is it possible that he is playing us all over again and he will be the quarterback of the Vikings come September? Well, I probably would too if someone offered me 20 million dollars. In fact, I would probably do a lot of things for 20 million which would include play with a bad ankle. Just make up your mind and get on with it. I don't want the rest of my adult life to have my yearly Brett Favre update every summer. When he does retire for good no one is ever going to believe him. MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!

To retire or not to retire

August 4th 2010 13:49
Brett Favre has been doing this for years. He decides to play, retire, play, retire, play and retire. He needs to make his choice and finally stick with it. After what I saw yesterday, he has completly hurt the Vikings franchise instead of doing the right thing and retiring months ago giving Brad Childress and others a chance to rebuild the team behind a different quarterback. Maybe they would have made a move to bring Donovan McNabb to Minnesota instead of him going to the Redskins. After the first couple of seasons with Favre playing these games I was alright with the fact that it took him a while to let the game go. After dissappointing fans in Green Bay, New York and Minnesota, I think it is finally time to let Favre go and hopefully he doesn't play the game in the future for an expansion team in Los Angeles. Please Brett Favre stay away from football since you are the last remaining player from the Tecmo Super Bowl series left playing that's not a kicker or a punter.

Rays Move On Top

August 4th 2010 12:52
When I came home last night from work I was stunned to see that the Tampa Rays moved in front of the Yankees for the best overall record in baseball. You may be asking why this stunned me? Considering the Yankees payroll is over 200 million dollars, the assumption is that they should have the best record in baseball. In fact, the top three organizations with the highest payroll are the Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies and we can all see how well the Red Sox and the Phillies are playing this year despite injuries.

With the Rays overall team salary just around 40 million dollars a year, it is fun to see a small market team continuously cause issues agains the assumptions of so many experts. Maybe there is some correlation? At this point I am stumped. I just hope that the Rays will continue to the playoffs and who knows, maybe they will actually win the World Series this time around.
