Sporting Mind - August 2008

NRL: Raiders v Souths Summary

August 24th 2008 23:37

With the Olympics finally over after 3 arduous weeks, we are free finally to focus our undivided attention on Australian domestic sport. Having not been to an NRL match all year, i decided to undertake a bit of investigative journalism - by travelling to the spiritual home of rugby league (ANZ Stadium, Homebush) and taking in a Raiders v Souths match.

I got to the ground early - something that is necessary at ANZ Stadium. Not due to the possibility of the game selling out, as there were at least 90,000 spare seats at the game, but because i had to find an ATM to get cash out, a process that normally takes about 3 hours at Homebush. After doing so at the Novotel, i was bewildered to find that the once barren "Raiders Army" had grown exponentially since my last visit to a game - now nearing at least three or four hundred parochial fans. All of them were drinking heavily. This was something that hadn't changed. However these were beers of hope, beers filled with promise and excitement. They were also beers filled with Tooheys New, the shittest beer in the world.

In the spirit of gonzo journalism and Hunter .S. Thompson himself, i decided the experience would be best enhanced through the consumption of alcohol (in the absence of mescaline/ether). After the worst Tooheys New of my life (which set me back $5.80) served in a flimsy plastic cup, i chose to enjoy the game sans beers.

The sea of Raiders jerseys at the game was breathtaking, akin to an Olympic opening ceremony. The sheer diversity of fans jerseys were astonishing. Men clearly took pride in trying to wear the most obscure Raiders jersey possible, with my personal favourite of the afternoon being a tattered, 1997 Super League jersey, worn by one fan with a deep appreciation of irony. Suddenly my own 1987 "Woodgers" jersey paled in comparison, however it did recieve many compliments from sections of the "Army". To my bemusement I did see a "Woodgers" 1987 away jersey, which obviously never existed. Some profiteer had obviously capitalised on the irony factor, and the new wave of retro jerseys which has swept the country of late. Whilst i knew this jersey never existed in the 80s, i still marvelled at its obscurity.

The game itself started badly. After the initial joy of a Adrian Purtell intercept, tries through Chris Sandow and Isaac Luke brought Souths ahead - and at half-time the Bunnies were leading 19-6, with a presumptuous Sandow field goal accounting for the obscure scoreline.

The Raiders Army remained buoyant however, somewhat oblivious to the fact that Mark Herbert and Troy Thompson had both suffered season ending injuries. Instead they danced like drunken medieval warriors toasting a victory, holding banners aloft that read "Sterling Thurling", "Campese Championese", "Simply the Best", etc. Nothing could burst this juggernaut.

Indeed this juggernaut was water-tight, as the second half yielded a flurry of Canberra tries -with the final score being 40-25 in favour of the Green Machine. The Raiders Army rejoiced heartily, as beers were spilled over young children and old men alike, but no-one seemed to care. At one stage a policeman came over (in the wake of last week's missile at Matai incident) somewhat apprehensively to request some discipline, but nothing escalated - as this was nothing but pure, unadulterated joy. Youngsters and veterans alike - Raiders fans from Generations X,Y, (and even a smattering of Baby Boomers) - all gathered to pay homage to a Raiders side depleted by injuries, yet working together as a cohesive unit to achieve the possibility of a top four finish.

Fans rushed to the sideline fence to shake hands/embrace their favourite sons, as scenes began to resemble that of returned soldiers greeting their families after years of isolated combat. Grown men - who were probably once homophobic jocks in their youth - hugged each other, brought together by a shared, platonic love (for the Raiders).

The win keeps Canberra in 6th position, just ahead of St George-Illawarra on for and against, however without a half-back and a front rower, Canberra are now more depleted than they have ever been before. Not that this will affect the Green Machine, as they press for a top four spot and a chance to cause some serious upsets in September.

If Canberra come 6th they will play Cronulla at Cronulla. Assuming that Manly and Melbourne win convincingly, even a loss to the Sharks would allow Canberra 2 bites at the "proverbial" - the proverbial acting as a euphemism for Grand Final aspirations.

As for SportingMind, it was a long walk back to the car and a one hour battle with traffic back home. Fuck these games at Homebush.

SportingMind's Olympic Wrap

August 20th 2008 00:04
Whilst SportingMind has to this point avoided writing about the Beijing Olympics, the time has now come to put my extremities to the keyboard and potter out a astute diatribe - which will hopefully address the key issues/happenings in the Olympics thus far.

Last night was Olympic Silver for our two most beloved darlings; Anna Meares in the Cycling sprint and Sally McLennan in the women's 100m hurdles. Apparently Meares had overcome the obligatory near death experience in order to take part in the Olympics this year, however her efforts were justly rewarded with a silver - albeit at the hands of yet another British rider

Gould literally eats his words.

August 18th 2008 01:11
Phil Gould was literally forced to eat his words last night in a function organised by the Canberra Raiders fan club, the "Green Army".

At the $250 benefit dinner, Gould was forced onstage to eat the 446 Herald Columns that he had tipped against the Raiders in, along with the printed online versions on the SMH website

Don't you dare jump on the Bandwagon.

August 14th 2008 02:10
The Oxford Dictionary defines it as: "A decorated wagon for a band of musicians to ride in, as in a parade." The common idiom: 'To get on the bandwagon', on the popular or winning side, as in an election". Other definitions include "A fallacy in which one is attracted to a popular party, faction or cause that attracts growing support; following the crowd rather than using evidence to justify a conclusion".

I refer to, of course, the phenomenon that is the "Bandwagon" effect. We as a nation are guilty of boarding this vehicle once every four years, during that ephemeral delight that is indeed the Olympic Games. The vehicle pulls up and we flock to this decorated wagon like mindless simpletons, thirsting for international validation through Olympic success

'Gilly' and Olympic Gold!

August 12th 2008 01:32
The venerable Adam Gilchrist's recent proclamation that 20/20 cricket should be a part of the Olympic games by the year 2020 earned quite mixed reactions from sections of the media. Not only was it a shameless attempt by Gilchrist to re-insert himself back into the glare of the public eye which he sorely misses after the seemingly endless homage that was paid to him during his last Test/One Day series; which included several video montages, countless memorabilia auctions, and a proverbial flood of bad KFC commericals designed to hammer home the fact that the golden boy was retiring. No, it was also a genuine plea to the IOC to consider cricket as an Olympic sport.

While the quixotic Gilchrist may have cricket's best interests at heart, the addition of 20/20 cricket to the Olympic games would be nothing short of farcical. Any sport that could potentially have Luke Ronchi claiming a gold medal at the end of proceedings deserves to not be an Olympic sport

NRL Canberra v Penrith; 74-12

August 10th 2008 23:32
The Canberra Raiders turned back the clock yesterday in front of 6000 of their loyal fans by truly annihilating a hapless Panthers outfit, 74-12. While Penrith opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, the Canberra team rallied together and went to the break ahead 38-12, going on to post a massive 62 point win that has elevated the club to 6th position only 4 weeks out from the finals series.

Who would have thought that the Raiders would be in 6th position, almost certain to claim one of the final 8 positions? Certainly not Phil Gould, with his impertinent Sunday "predictions" in the Herald being consistently wrong when it comes to the Raiders

An Open Letter to Todd Carney

August 8th 2008 02:34
In the tradition of NRL players and Australian sportsmen alike penning "open letters" to fans - explaining their errant off-field behaviour; SportingMind has thought it appropriate to issue an open letter to Todd Carney, in the wake of his recent shenanigans. Though this correspondence (which will be sent via Australia Post this afternoon), SportingMind hopes to reach out to Mr Carney and offer him practical advice - constructive criticism that aims to help the young man, whilst other media pundits aim for the proverbial jugular.

The Exclusive Interview.

Slightly bleary-eyed afted a 13 hour sojourn to Paris to conduct the first exclusive interview with run-away Sonny Bill Williams, a nervous energy permeated my body - I was about to get the inside scoop on the SBW saga! Grateful for the opportunity (given to me by Orble.com - all fully paid for), i was somewhat relieved to have actually made the landing-strip (since i was aboard a Qantas 747) - but once i had walked through customs and collected my baggage, i was free to sample the Parisian delights - the city itself really is a feast for the senses
