The Essential Origin One Wrap-Up

May 21st 2008 23:38
The bold selection of Peter Wallace at halfback paid off for NSW last night, as the blues trumped the Maroons 18-10. Secretly the NSW selectors would be rejoicing that this gamble came off, meaning that Wallace is primed for an Origin two birth in 3 weeks time.

If we look at the Wallace selection (and indeed the Origin series) in the form of an extended metaphor, we can see that the selection of Wallace was indeed a crucial one. The "hush" factor was immense, in fact no one really predicted Wallace would get the call up, but selectors were busy consumating their desire to start a new half-back dynasty. The eventual selection of Wallace revealed this consumation in its embryonic stage, and the lead up to origin one would be the difficult first trimester.

Last night NSW selectors got through that first trimester, thus negating the potential for miscarriage. I really could go on with this metaphor as it is limitless (e.g Wallace has a bad game = a devastating miscarriage, selectors are forced to look for alternative measures, e.g. a new halfback - perhaps through IVF?), but it is safe to say that barring any complications, this origin series will (by the end of the 3rd game/trimester) give birth to a halfback who could be around for many series to come. Lets hope he is raised properly and doesn't hang around the wrong crowd.

Now that i have satisfied my own selfish desires, we can return to the actual reporting of the game. Despite the lack of an all-in brawl, SportingMind was sufficiently satified with the amount of head injuries sustained by the players, and the level of blood protruding from various faces was enough to make a young Hannibal Lecter a little toey.

Anthony Quinn managed to cross for two tries before anyone realised that they didn't actually know who this man was. Mark Gasnier was actually quite impressive, leading many Fairfax journalists to make the easy comparison's to uncle Reg this morning. His partner in crime Matt Cooper was equally as impressive, making some good defensive decisions whilst at the same time maintaining his disgusting rat-tail that reminds us all that rugby league players have a distorted concept of reality.

The QLD team by comparison looked very ordinary in both attack and defence, only scoring in the 39th minute with a lucky touch down by Brent Tate. Tate irks me in that you would think a man with a neck brace would either stop playing contact sport and resign themselves to just "being thankful" they aren't paralysed - in fact Tate is a slap in the face to the paraplegic community. This isn't my only gripe with Tate; his horse-like features also are more suited to Spring Carnival than an Origin extravaganza, but he did do the job on the wing last night. The Karmichael Hunt experiment was a definite flop, and should never have been entertained as an option. Just like the show Yasmin's Getting Married , it was just a bad concept that should have stayed in the boardroom.

Johnathan Thurston looked tired and creatively spent. QLD definitely need to make at least one change for Origin Two, that being the omission of Hunt and the inclusion of Prince/or Lockyer, regarding fitness. Otherwise the NSW juggernaut could potentially close this series out in 3 weeks up in Brisbane.

SportingMind's pick?
- QLD will bounce back. It's too early to predicted a "Bluewash", and QLD should win comfortably in the 2nd game if they stick to their game plan.

The most ignored, neglected and disrespected team in the NRL is of course, the Canberra Raiders. The "darlings" of Monday night football are rarely spoken of, unless it is in reference to an off-field incident. Even respected commentators such as Ray Warren struggle to identify players (think 'Michael' Chalk), and the chance of Channel 9 televising a Raiders game is about as likely as a high Brendan Nelson approval rating.

I think the Raiders are destined to be the team that produces great young talent, and then loses it to cashed up clubs looking to unearth the latest sensation. Already this year William Zillman has gone to the Gold Coast, but before him we have seen names such as Brett Finch, Michael Hodgson, Mike Robertson, Luke Williamson, Todd Payten, Ben Cross, Simon Woolford all defect to other clubs - even Woolford chose to become a second string hooker at St George ahead of captaining the Raiders. Not to mention the revolving door of coaches who seem to leave once other clubs recognise they can work "wonders" with the limited playing roster they have

White-Line Wendell aims High

May 16th 2008 04:45
It was great to see Wendell "Rock-Star" Sailor on the Footy Show last night, back after a lengthy 2 year ban due to white-line fever. Wendell appeared confident, eloquent and charateristically cocky, (which leads one to wonder whether he was drug-tested after the show), but in all truth it was fantastic to see the big winger back in the media spotlight.

The earnest nature in which he responded to the questions regarding his past was incredibly refreshing, in a day where media contracts are handed out wily-nily to the most mundane and uninspiring of football commentators. Wendell Sailor has done himself a great service by returning to Rugby League, this weekend for the Shellharbour Marlins. What an apt way for Wendell's return to Rugby League - through the Jim Beam Cup - given his admission to binge drinking, or "smashing himself" as he stated last night. I'm sure the Jim Beam sponsors have nothing to worry about, as i'm sure Wendell wiill be having his bourbon and cokes sans bourbon, instead opting for a clean-living lifestyle that is more appropriate for an aging sportsman

Warney and World Politics

May 15th 2008 06:25
The Tuesday bombings in India has rocked the Jaipur-based side "Rajasthan Royals", with Shane Warne and ex-Victorian keeper Darren Berry expressing their anxiety over the incident which left 80 dead and many injured.

These bombings have proved to be the most exciting event so far in the IPL to date. In fact, i'd like to know how much the "oligarchs" that run the competition paid the brainiacs that instigated the bombings? Surely a quality bombing that brings life to the competition should be rewarded with a handsome salary. If Andrew Symonds gets paid $1.5 million for one or two explosive innings, then surely such an explosion in its own rights deserves a rich profit. I may add the term "bring life to the competition" is a tasteless play on words - just in case anybody noticed the rich irony

Thankfully we can all rest now that the NSW Origin side has been picked. Months of anticipation and predictions not seen since the y2k bug was a threat can now be eased, and fairfax journalists can start banging their heads together coming up with new headlines besides "My Origin team predictions".

Peter Wallace is the clear bolter, and will add the necessary structure to a backline which craves to be told what to do. His clear judgement is important in a time where halfbacks are half-a-dozen, yet none in the field seem to have the ability to geniuinely lay claim to a deserved origin halfback role

It is commonly known that the muscle-bound footballer attracts a certain type of lady. A bright young lass with an apitude for science, humanities and all things academia, will naturally gravitate towards a footballer whose I.Q generally will fail to be the square root of whatever number is on the back of his jersey.

Of course i write the above paragraph in jest - but only to highlight the various affiliations that a certain sportswoman has had with high profile athletes. The lass i refer to, is Candice Falzon

Whilst racking my brain for a genuinely unique blog topic that doesn't somehow involve Sam Newman, my mind shifted this week from AFL ramblings to an NRL focus. More importantly, to the decision awaiting the NSW selectors when it comes time to pick their team for Origin 1.

The City/Country match was billed as a half-back showdown, although we frankly all know that Kurt Gidley has the position in the bag. Gidley is a deserved no 7, he is tailor made for origin - and will inspire his backs and forwards through his sense of organisation and his own individual abilities

Being a young disillusioned male, i am one of many citizens who is considering a fresh start in a new city. The city i am thinking of fleeing to is Melbourne, the one i am abandoning is Sydney.

Whilst much has been made in the papers about the "Sydney Crisis" - the fact that thousands of "Gen-Y'ers" are leaving in droves to saviour the supposed cultural utopia that is Melbourne, i am going to look at Melbourne and Sydney purely from a sporting perspective
