Sporting Mind - July 2007

Kevin Sheedy, the coach of the Essendon Bombers for the last 27 years and one of the most iconic coaches the AFL have seen, was given his walking papers yesterday afternoon as it was announced that he would not be at the helm of Essendon after the 2007 season.

Sheedy, who has been in charge of the Bombers since 1981, was dismissed from his position after the board announced that they would not be renewing his contract after the current season. Whilst this move was considered a shocking play by supporters and players alike, many pundits were commenting that this would be the final year that Sheedy was in charge of the club since the beginning of the 2007 season.

Whilst this move has thrown the coaches musical chairs this season another spot to plant their feet, what is unremarkable is the fact that despite Sheedy’s unbelievable and ongoing success, he might be struggling to find a new role to coach in during the 2008 season.

There is no doubt that if any club did hire Sheedy as their new coach, then they would immediately bolster their squad with his experience and knowledge of the game. His ability to read the state of play, advancement of modern tactics and his unfounded experience in handling the media would give any club he moves to and unprecendented advantage in the league. The question is though, who has the finances and the space on their sheet to fit Sheedy?

If we look at the three clubs already looking for coaches, it might be seen as a hard fit. Melbourne, Fremantle and Carlton have already shortlisted their candidates, and whilst many sides would tear up any resumes in an instance to bring Sheedy to their squad, these three clubs would be hard pressed to organise Sheedy in the head coach role.

Carlton would have to reconsider very hard about hiring Sheedy, as not only has he been a heavy rival for the past 21 years and reconsidered a slap in the face of their supporters hiring the enemy, but also as they are focusing on redeveloping a younger squad with no finals prospects Sheedy would be thinking about this role as it would not give him the satisfying immediate results.

Melbourne are in the same boat, as they have discussed their options of not recovering from this season until 2010. With their senior players on the cusp of retirement, and a whole group of younger players needing the skills and passion of the game placed into them, Sheedy would be the perfect choice for setting their side on the right course. But their next coach has to be in the frame for the future whilst the side rebuilds, and Sheedy’s age might be a huge factor against him.

This leaves Fremantle, who could use his discipline and ability to bring a side together, but it is considered unlikely that he will coach in the West. But it is a different form of play, a different environment, and with Sheedy’s experience, a different salary which the Dockers would be hard pressed to find.

As this essentially rules out all available clubs, I still believe that there is one squad that has the money, the need, the success, and above all the potential spot that Sheedy could fill.

At Geelong, coach Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson has not resigned a contract to stay on after this season. Whilst this was a clever move by the board before the season just to make sure that Thompson had the ability to rule the Cattery after this season, it has the potential to blow up in their faces. Thompson was of course a captain and long serving player for the Bombers, and with how the Geelong are storming the competition, Thompson is making all the right moves in grabbing interest by opposing sides, especially the Bombers.

Essendon are of course looking at interest in Thompson, and if Geelong let him slip through their fingers and he returns to Windy Hill, then the opening for Sheedy to return in 2008 would be out in Geelong. They have the side for immediate success, they have the discipline and ability to start strong next season, and if they do not make it this year, they will definitely have the drive to take the premiership.

If Geelong fail in their premiership drive, they would be looking for a coach that could give them immediate success next season whilst their squad is strong, and Sheedy is definitely the man who has the ability to hand them that premiership. What is more, they would be looking short term, and with Sheedy’s age a potential factor for a long term role this role could be the perfect way to finish an unbelievable career. It means a lot of events have to play out, and Sheedy would have to really consider if he could continue a career out of the Bombers squad, and with it premiership success.

Until next time, sports minds.

In the American sports arena, where all the major codes have been thrown into disarray in the last few weeks with various scandals and allegations (dog fighting and assault charges in the NFL, bribing and illegal betting in NBA), the Major League Baseball has at least a record that everyone can look forward to.

At the moment, Barry Bonds is just two home runs shy of breaking the all time home run records, which is currently held by 60’s legend ‘Hank’ Aaron. This record has definitely been the shining beacon in the major league, and for some years be the constant talking point about who would be the one that would finally break Aaron’s record of 755 home runs.

In yet another twist during the Blues’ long winded downfall, coach Denis Pagan was given the sack from the club this evening after five years at the helm.

In a week that the Fremantle Dockers will be yearing to forget quickly, another massive roadblock has hit the western club as their star forward and prominent ‘bad boy’ Jeff Farmer is once again in trouble with the police of criminal vandalism.

Farmer, who earlier in the year was suspended from the club due to being involved in an altercation with a bouncer whilst intoxicated, was reportedly involved with damage to a car in front of a Perth nightspot earlier this week. Today the police questioned Farmer over the incident, and after the interview was charged with damage to the vehicle.

The Socceroos have finally put their first game jitters behind them last night as they were able to beat Thailand and scrape into the quarter finals of the Asian Cup. Australia, who went into the match having to win to advance in the tournament, finally set a standard of quality team play as they systematically destroyed the opposition in the final half to take the match 4-0, and with it the second place in the group rounds to scrape into the final sixteen.
With the win, the Socceroos have draw up against the winner of Group B in the quarter finals, and have draw once again against the fast growing nemesis, Japan. The match up on Saturday night has quickly become one of the biggest matches this tournament, as not only will it be the pre-cup favourites versus the two-time tournament champions, but it will also see Japan have the opportunity to grab revenge from a side that defeated them in the World Cup group stage.
Graham Arnold, coach of the Socceroos, has been able to inject more action into the upcoming match against Japan, claiming today that the pressure is completely on Japan to win the upcoming knockout match.

There is no doubt that there is an constant cycle that occurs in the AFL and NRL competitions. Every three years or so the leagues go through an complete wipe of his coaching positions, and we see a huge turnaround of coaches in the space of three months during the off-season. Last year in the NRL we saw a massive change in coaching positions, with five coaches changing around their roles during the post season, and it seems the tides are turning for the AFL this season.

We have already seen the first casualty this year, with Neil Daniher already leaving his role at the Melbourne Demons and the club already in negotiations for the new coach next season. But it seems that Daniher will not be the only person leaving his position this year, but who else is on the chopping block?

Brad ‘Freddie’ Fittler has taken over the reign of the Sydney Roosters yesterday, and have already begun to draw question marks after claiming that he was willing to drop players and “make the big calls” against his former teammates, yet in the same day announce an unchanged side for their next match against Cronulla.
The Roosters, who suffered their second biggest defeat in the club’s 100 year history losing to Manly 56-0 on Sunday, have been in a state of shock for the past few days. 24 hours after their dramatic loss to the Sea Eagles, coach Chris Anderson immediately announced his registration from the position, citing health reason for his leaving. Fittler was named as his replacement on Monday night, and whilst there has been some questions in regards to how he will perform with his former side, he has taken a strong stance by naming an unchanged side to face the Sharks this week.
Whilst Fittler has claimed that he has a massive task ahead of him, he has made the point that the ladder is not the main target for the remaining eight rounds of the season, but rather refitting the club as a stronger side in the competition whilst undertaking the caretaker role.

After an exciting State of Origin 3 match, where even many thought the dead rubber would be lifeless, has turned into one of the most exciting games this season, both before, during and after the siren.

Before the siren both camps were talking big. The NSW players were speaking under breath of mutiny, whilst the Maroons were promoting that they were aiming for an all-Queensland whitewash, thinking that they would be able to easily upset the Blues on their home patch.

World number 2 Rafael Nadal has finally advanced to the fourth round of the Wimbeldon tournament after winning his match against Sweden’s Robin Soderling which took a marathon five days after rain has backlogged the Wimbeldon tournament to be over 200 matches behind, and the worst the tournament has seen in 25 years.

Nadal, who won the epic match 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 4-6, 7-5, had to dig deep to defeat the number 28 seed after he was pushed to the limits in many sets, and with rain delays extending the match to over five days after they first stepped on court.

Carlton have started this week taking a hard stance against their recent dismal performances by suspending star full-forward Brendan Fevola for a week after what the club called ‘unacceptable onfield performance’.

The Blues, who are now looking at the back of two successive major drubbings at the hands of Hawthorn (100 points) and last week against Fremantle (by 77 points at Subiaco), are sitting 14th on the ladder and despite looking strong for the first half of the season, there is no doubt that Carlton will not be making the strong push up the ladder that many people anticipated.
