Sporting Mind - March 2007

A coach of a high profile side once joked that he wished his side played twelve months out of the year so it would not give his players a chance to cause trouble. Well after the last five months do not be surprised if the AFL will consider this next season…

It is not a surprise that nearly everyone involved in the Australian Football League is very excited that the 2007 season is only twenty four hours away, when the Melbourne Demons take on the St. Kilda Saints at the MCG, because above all, it means that they can finally put one of their worst off-seasons behind them and finally focus on the game itself.

Whilst it is no secret that during the summer months the public managers for the clubs and the league work overtime to overcome all the public scandals that break, the AFL had no where to hide as it seems that they could not get their house into order, and had to brave the storm until now.

Players sent home from the International Series in disgrace, relations with Ireland breaking down over brawls, players found drunk in public, players involved in fights and assaults, players found out with substance abuse problems, and all on top of the league losing one of their much loved chairmen Ron Evans, who passed away from cancer in March, the AFL were in a world of hurt and seemed to looking for the vultures to pick them off.

However, with that said, the footy is starting, and with it all the problems that arrived over the summer will be gone as soon as the football is bounced on Friday night. So with that said, let’s dismiss their checkered past for one second as we take a look at the

AFL 2007 Crystal Bowl

Frontrunners - First lets look at the teams that are going to emerge at the top of the ladder for the majority of the season. Two of the big sides who have been there for a number of season, Sydney & Adelaide, will again be there, and they will probably coast this season into the finals once again. But the other side to keep a close eye on is last year’s dark horse, Fremantle, who will be looking for blood as they attempt to get that elusive first flag. And as for the premiers, West Coast? It is too hard to predict, simple as that. But my instinct is that they will not be as hard as they have been last year and the year before.

Also Rans – The sides who will not be able to make any headway this year are two sides that have been disappointing in 2006. Brisbane and the Kangaroos will be the two sides that will be fighting not to get the wooden spoon. As they both have lost a key forward (Kangaroos with Nathan Thompson, Brisbane with Daniel Bradshaw), and with an already limited squad list, they simply will not be able to make any move upwards in 2007.

Biggest Change – Interestingly I cannot split the last two sides in 2006 in who will make the biggest change in 2007. Carlton & Essendon have sufficiently bolstered their squads (the Bombers with players such as Mal Michael, the Blues with a number of youngsters), and I think that both of these will make the biggest shift upwards from their disappointing places last year.

Dark Horse – The one side that will be unpredictable is the Western Bulldogs. Last year they had a horror run with injuries, yet were still able to make a push to the finals until the last possible second. Now with a stronger list (including Brisbane star Jason Akermanis), and with a bit of luck injury side, do not be surprised if they make a stronger push up the eight, all the way to September.

Finals Contenders – Sydney, Adelaide, Fremantle, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, West Coast, Melbourne, St. Kilda.

Grand Finallists – Sydney v Fremantle

Brownlow Medallist – Between Sydney’s Adam Goodes & Fremantle’s Matthew Pavlich

Norm Smith – Expect Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd to put behind his injury stricken season last year and lead the way throughout 2007.

Game to Watch – Whilst the 1st Round match between Sydney and West Coast will be a great gauge to see how the Eagles will perform, expect the best when Brisbane face up against their former teammate Akermanis with the Bulldogs in Round 11. That’s when the sparks will truly fly.

What to Expect – To put it simply, expect the unexpected. The drugs issue will run rampant all season, and it seems that the sides are finally becoming too close to call. Maybe Richmond will be in the top eight, maybe West Coast will bomb out. Maybe on the back on Lloyd Essendon will be able to climb into the eight, or maybe Hawthorn will be able to bounce back after all these years with their squad of talented youngsters. Whatever you think, it is obvious that this will be a fantastic season.

Until next time, sports minds.

During the World Swimming Championships tonight, American swimmer Michael Phelps has taken one further step in making sure that his former rival in the pool, the retired Ian Thorpe, becomes a distant memory after he absolutely demolished the record held by Thorpe for 200m freestyle.

In the final tonight, Phelps shaved a staggering 1.5 seconds of his personal best time to beat Thorpe’s world record time of 1:44.06, taking the gold medal with the new world record time of 1:43.86 seconds.

Another weekend of sport is over, and whilst their was action in the NRL, the V8 Supercars, the Super 14’s and even the World Swimming Championships, all eyes were over in St. Kitts as Australia was taking on South Africa in the Cricket World Cup.

Australia were once again on that winning feeling, beating South Africa in the highly anticipated World Cup Group match. As the game was simply to see who would finish top of the group, their was a lot at stake, as Australia was about to take on the side that upended them out of the one day number one ranking.

Cousins’ Problem Outed

March 22nd 2007 13:31
In what will be the biggest story to come out of the AFL ever since the infamous Carey incident, Ben Cousins’ father, Bryan Cousins, announced on channel ten tonight that the reason behind his son’s suspensions and disappearance is due to a substance abuse problem.

The problem, which has been apparently known by the club for at least six months, lead to Cousin’s suspension from the club, which is now in damage control to ensure the entire AFL does not deem the Eagles have a drug problem.

The AFL regular season has not even started yet, but it seems to most people that last year’s premiers, the West Coast Eagles, are already tearing at the seams.

This comes after the shocking announcement that the Eagles star midfielder, and former captain, Ben Cousins has been suspended from the club indefinitely due to breaching club rules.

World Cup Mourns Progressive Coach

March 19th 2007 13:13
As the ICC World Cup gives us a number of surprises day in and out, no one was expecting the shock that went around the cricketing world today as news broke that Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer had died overnight.

Woolmer was found in his hotel room unconscious after his side was bundled out of the World Cup due to a surprise loss to Ireland. Whilst the cause of death has not been determined yet, rumours are flying around that it was brought on from a mix of prescription drugs and alcohol.

Well the footy season is once again upon us. The NRL started its 2007 season, whilst the AFL gave us a taste of things to come next week. Follow that up with a few surprises in the ICC Cricket World Cup, and the Melbourne F1 to name a few and this weekend was heaven for the sporting fans!

Lets start with the NRL , and a few upsets were had in the first round of the 2007 season. The Newcastle Knights overcame an injury to star captain Andrew Johns and a 24-8 half time deficit to take the game 25-24 against the Bulldogs. The Knights were able to tie up the match late in the second half, before a field goal by Kurt Gidley gave them a dramatic first round win. The predicted premiers Melbourne Storm won their first match of the season, however were unable to thoroughly thrash the West Tigers at home, only to scape a win in by two points, winning 18-16.

World Cup Fever! (Cricket Style)

March 15th 2007 12:53
Well it’s now underway, what many cricket fans have been waiting for since the Ashes demolition in December, the ICC Cricket World Cup. Whilst the Commonwealth Bank Trophy and the Champions Trophy are two highly sought after championships, this is the pinnacle of one day cricket, what many nations will train hard for over four years to break into.

And Australia have been gearing up for this contest for a number of months. With a disappointing end to the Australian cricket season both on home soil and in New Zealand, they were looking for some revenge in the World Cup. After a few practice matches, where they could flex their sporting muscles, they decided to make their stance in the first match, and unfortunately for minnow opponent Scotland, this could only mean one thing, a demolition derby.

After the wildly successful season that the A-League just went through, it would be sensible that now would be the time that the league would take a well-deserved rest, and above all lay low as all the other football codes get into full swing.

It seems not to be the case for the FFA. The same day as their head of operations, Matt Carroll, announced his retirement from the position, he announced a final bombshell and declared that the FFA had set a final deadline with the now floundering New Zealand licence and its potential new club in Wellington.

Tonight we might see a changing of the guard in the NBL. After the three-year dominance of the Sydney Kings was brought to their knees by the Tigers last season, they might lose their crown tonight to the Brisbane Bullets, who attempt to win their first championship in 20 years.

Wednesday night proved how strong the Bullets are, and how desperate they are to win. Making the Tigers look like a second rate team, they completely ran them out of the match. Hard defence, clever shots, and constant pressure gave the Bullets the victory in game 3, downing the reigning champions 113-93.

Wednesday Night Live!

March 6th 2007 13:51
In Australian culture, the time for sport has always been the weekend. All football, soccer, rugby and motor racing events are held on the weekend, and for many sporting fans the time between Friday afternoon and Monday mornings have always been a haven of sporting action.

So it becomes a rarity when mid-week gives us a great night of sport. Tomorrow night, there is not one but two huge events and I, like many sports fans, are conflicted in what to get immersed in. Tomorrow night we have the NBL Grand Final where the Melbourne Tigers and the Brisbane Bullets fight it out in Game 3, whilst one of the biggest boxing events Australia has seen will be playing out against Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine vs Sam ‘The King’ Soliman. Tough decision.

The NRL Trial matches held a massive shock this weekend after during St. George Illawarra’s Charity Shield match against the South Sydney Rabbbitohs the Dragons lost their star play Mark Gasnier to a chest muscle injury.

The injury, which was inflicted during a rountine tackle, turned out to be a torn pectoral muscle, will require surgery and as a result will keep Gasnier out of the squad for at least six months. This will means that looking very optimistically at Gasnier making his earliest comeback during the last games in the home and away season, and at worst will see the five-eighths not play a game during the 2007 season.

Weekend Wrap – New Beginnings

March 4th 2007 12:03
March is one of the most exciting months on the sporting calender. Whilst September holds championships and premierships, it is in March that all supporters believe that their side can take the title in the long months ahead, and the first weekend can many sporting fans a taste of the action and excitement of the coming months.

Whilst March is known as the time of new beginnings, in the NBL the season is wrapping up, with Brisbane Bullets and the Melbourne Tigers squaring up in the best of five Grand Final series. Brisbane, who took away the minor premiership, kept their unbeaten run alive, taking away their 21st straight victory and the first match of the finals on Friday, edging out the Tigers in Brisbane 98-95. However the Tigers are by now means intimidated by the strength the Bullets have shown this season, and evened out the series, taking the second match on Sunday 105-91. The Tigers were in fact looking like they were going to be behind by two matches by half time, nine points and outplayed by Brisbane, but in the third quarter performed absolutely brilliantly, and were able to shock the Bullets to take the lead, outscoring them in the third quarter by an amazing 39-16 points. Whilst the Bullets tried valiantly to get back into the match in the final quarter, they were unable to match the Tigers at home, and now look at a 1-1 tie going into the third game in Brisbane in what is looking like going to be an nail-biter finals series.

Whilst I wrote about the AFL and their off-field dramas with Kerr a few days ago, the NRL has made their own headlines due to the St. George Illawarra’s star Wes Naiqama recent brush with the law, or course with a far more dire consequence.

Yesterday, facing up in court, Naiqama was sentenced to a two-days a week periodic dentention for 12 months after he was caught driving whilst disqualified, a previous offence which netted him a $2500 fine and banned him from being behind the wheel until 2013. He will now have to face up to mid-week detention for a minimum of six months before parole.
