Sporting Mind - January 2007

While most of cricket fans are still stunned at how after being in a such a prominent position yesterday against New Zealand they nearly lost their first one day match of the season, the players themselves have come out and commented that they are still keeping one eye on the Black Caps as a formidable opponent.

After destroying the bowling yesterday, and cruising to the ground record at the WACA of 5/343, they faced up against a serious contest against New Zealand, who despite an awe inspiring century of 70 balls from Jacob Oram narrowly lost the match by eight runs.

Today was another testament that how New Zealand performed in Perth, with two key players in the Australia squad, Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting, commenting on the performance. Gilchrist stated to the media how the Black Caps are a serious ‘dark horse’ in the Commonwealth Bank Tri Series Trophy, whilst Ponting lamented on his team’s performance, declaring that he prefers the ‘simpler wins’ they have experienced this season.

First of all, I think Gilchrist is on the money about New Zealand. They are definitely the second team to watch this series, and whilst England are dismal with no hope of recovering, the Black Caps have the ability, and above all the confidence, to destroy the chance of an undefeated season for Australia.

However, from what Ponting stated today, I think the furthest thing Australia needs at the moment is a summer of simpler wins. We are only a few months away from the most important tournament on the one-day calender, the World Cup, and the one thing the squad does not need is a complacent attitude going into such an important series.

There is no doubt that Australia will be one of, if not the biggest, powerhouse going into the competition, and if there has ever been a time where Australia needs to be tested time and time again, it is right now in the series.

If we think back just 18 months ago, we have to remember that resting on our laurels is what loses us trophies. Going into the Ashes in England in 2005, we were able to annihilate them in the first test, but when they recovered and actually put up a fight, we could comprehend it, and with that went the Ashes.

Luckily we were able to draw this back this summer, but it must be a lesson learnt. When Australia thinks they have the victory in the bag that is when the wheels fall off the wagon.

With the World Cup looming, I personally welcome any challenges the Black Caps set. Not only does it make us more confident and stronger going into such an important season of one day cricket, but it might also teach the squad the important fact that when a side seriously challenges them in the limited overs match, then they have the talent, ability, and above all the confidence to rise above it for victory.

Plus it does not hurt letting us loyal supporters watch an interesting game every now and again.

Until next time, sports minds.

Whilst the month of September is known for its finals series, it seems that the summer of finals is upon us as the Australian Open wraps up, the A-League begins its finals campaign, and the NBL and one day tournament begins to gear up, with New Zealand finally showing some form in the game.

Lets begin with the Australian Open and once more Roger Federer will leave the tournament with the trophy in his grasp. After convincingly knocking out Andy Roddick in the semi-final on Friday, Federer was able to win his third straight Open championship, downing Fernando Gonzalas 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4.

Is Federer Simply The Best?

January 25th 2007 12:10
As the semi finals wrap up in the Australian Open, Roger Federer has once more displayed his global dominance in the sport by booking a spot in the final by effectively and systematically dismantling the second favourite to take the title, Andy Roddick.

In what was hyped as one of the biggest matches within the entire tournament, the match itself turned out to be quite lacklustre, as Federer was able to notch the win in one hour and 23 minutes, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

Well Sporting Mind is back after a small unplanned break, and whilst the Weekend Wrap was not able to come alive this week, we start by examining at the first finals series for 2007, the A-League Finals.

The eight teams have been cut down to four, and after a season that was decided with two games in the final round, it cannot be said that this season was as close as they come.

Well, as much as many of the Australia fans would have liked to see them sent home without a single win, England were able to snatch a victory despite their best chances to lose against New Zealand in the final over of the match.

As the newest franchise, the Gold Coast Titans, are gearing up for their inaugural season in the NRL, the last 24 hours would have hit their side hard.

Since yesterday afternoon, the Titans have lost two first class wingers, Melbourne Steve Turner and Great Britain’s Brian Carney, and had a minor (note I said minor) injury scare to their marquee player Mat Rogers.

As South Africa looks set to cruise to a simple Test win on the fifth day of their match against Pakistan, but the match has already taken a bad turn due to racist slurs and comments allegedly made by the Proteas on the fourth day.

The comments, which range from slurs such as ‘animals’ ‘hyenas’ and ‘they should be sent back to the zoo’, were picked up by the stump cam microphone and broadcasted around the world with the cricket coverage.

How Will the Ashes Change After 5-0?

January 4th 2007 12:25
Tomorrow afternoon, at the SCG, we will see history. Not only will it be the last Test matches that three players that have made Australia so dominant in the past, but it will be the first time since 1920 that England have lost the Ashes chase in a whitewash.

In the past 86 years, both sides have at least put up a brave front for all Test matches, and regardless of which side is able to claim the urn in victory, wither England of Australia have been able to walk away with at least one victory to their name.
