Sporting Mind - October 2006

Semi Finals Heats Up the Summer Comp

October 31st 2006 10:32
Well it was definitely a hard week for the Australian cricket squad. Not only did they have an early scare going down to the West Indies in their opening squad game, but they opening batsman Shane Watson went into hospital with what he was fearing was an heart attack, whilst many former cricketers and pundits were flying criticism around about our aging squad.

But it seems that they have put this all behind us. After the shocking loss to the Windies, which in the end turned out not so shocking as they ended up in the other semi-final, they were able to turn it on against the rest of their opponents. England saw what we could be made of come Ashes time, and when push came to shove, not even the home town themselves could keep us out of the finals.

But now we are to face up against our local foes, the Kiwis. As luck would have it, it seems to enter the final for the ICC Champions Trophy the Australian will have to win at the ANZAC match, and personally I could not think of a better way.

First of all, when it comes to one-day cricket, New Zealand really do know how to play the game. They have for some time held a really well-rounded squad. Its aggressive in batting and fielding when needs be, and their bowling is in-depth enough for most sides to fall victim at one stage or another.

Now I am not saying that they are better than us at cricket, far from it, but from recent history we can see that they do make a worthy opponent. Like the Poms who know how to perform in Tests, the Kiwis can do it in 50 overs or less.

Second of all, it is really a warm-up to the Tri Nation Series this summer. When many people are looking forward to the Ashes against our oldest rivals, it is the one-day competition that might hold the best competition.

Whilst England are not well-known for their one day squad, they have improved in leaps and bounds over the last year or so, and in fact might be able to stand up for a few rounds. New Zealand on the other hand are also strong coming over, and will give all of us a run for our money. In essence, I think we are looking at one of the best tournaments this country has held for quite some time.

Finally, the Australian squad have talked themselves up about improving over the last few games, which is true, and that their squad can stand up to anything, which is the half-truth. But in the end they are only as good as their last game, and their next opponent will be looking on with glee. The matches between these two sides are always action packed, and on a such a large stage with so much at stake, you will see the action heat up even more.

It will be a great match to see, and personally I think the sides that claims victory will not only take the ICC Champions Trophy, but might be champions during our summer as well.

Until next time, sports minds.

Weekend Wrap - Feild Of Oma-zing Class

October 29th 2006 23:13
Today we welcome back an old friend, and that is the perfect tool for anyone who missed the action this weekend, the Sporting Mind weekend wrap!

As the Spring Carnival gears up for the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup, we see the field of class that is appearing. The W.S Cox Plate saw a legend finish off a stellar career with style and class, as Fields of Omagh was able to win this race for the second time. The nine year old was able to pip El Segundo at the post by a nose and finished his career as a champion horse, who was always a fixture during the last decade’s spring carnival.

Well the AFL have announced today their schedule for the 2007 season. As usual there were some winners, some losers and some indifferent clubs to how the fixture has panned out.

First of all the big winner is once more… Collingwood. That’s right, the team that most fans love to hate has by far the easiest ride into the finals. As they only have to leave their home state a total of four times in the entire season.

Dragons Need Healing Process

October 23rd 2006 13:18
Well we are now five rounds in for the NBL Phillips Championship for 2006-07, and already the second Melbourne franchise is already struggling in their debut season.

The South Dragons, who entered the competition behind a long list of failed second Melbourne sides, are already behind the eight ball after not even a quarter of the season passing by. No wins after five matches, and announced today that they were parting ways with American coach Mark Price and import Todd Fuller.

Well a semi crisis was adverted last night. In the ICC Champions Trophy match against our arch nemesis England, Australia was able to walk away victors by six wickets, and therefore stay in contention for the tournament.

It was a match that was very touch and go all night. England were able to start off strongly, scoring 83 runs in the first 18 overs without losing a wicket. However after that both Bell and Pietersen fell quickly, and the Poms quickly seemed to lose their momentum.

Voss Entitled To His Farewell

October 20th 2006 12:57
With all of 2006 AFL finished except for the International Rules matches, we have said goodbye to a small number of great players who have ever graced the field, and not one was bigger and better than Brisbane captain Michael Voss.

With a number of achievements in his cabinet, including five club best and fairest, a Brownlow medal, and more importantly the three consecutive premiership medallions won from 2001 – 2003.

Has Ten Runs Lost Australia The Trophy?

October 19th 2006 13:05
As most one-day cricket fans are just getting into the ICC Champions Trophy in India, Australia has indeed started their campaign on the backfoot. In their first match of the competition, in what was considered a simple match to start off with, the Aussies have lost against the West Indies by ten runs.

Now first of all lets point out that this was a fantastic match, one that most people would have been glued to until the wee hours of the morning. West Indies lost their first few wickets without a worry, and the match had all the marking of a whitewash as the islanders were 4-64. However a 137 run partnership between Runako Morton and Brian Lara steered the side back on track, and were able to complete their overs on a solid 6-234.

As the farce that was the Adelaide vs Melbourne game, it was the Adelaide coach John Kosima who has been hit the hardest from it all.

First of all, I realise that it has been a long break between drinks, and for all you sporting minds out there that have been waiting for the next instalment, I am sorry for such a delay. But now we have a new format, and more importantly with such a sports packed summer ahead of us, a new determination with the site, to accurately and objectively cover all the best sports that hit our shores and abroad, now guaranteed six days a week.

With that out of the way, lets look at the major issue that has arisen from the recent started ICC Champions Trophy. As Pakistan were preparing for their first match against Sri Lanka, they had to face up to yet another scandal as their two best fast bowlers, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, were being sent home after testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.

Moore Sense Needed!

October 5th 2006 12:40
As the soccer now takes the title of the only football code still playing until next year, it seems that they are not attacking this opportunity ideally. Not only has the A-League lost their marquee player with Dwight Yorke, as well as their founder and chairman, but now the Socceroos, and more specifically potential skipper Craig Moore cannot seem to get it together for a number of small Asian Cup qualifiers being played in the next week.

Moore has certainly put his foot in it this week. Down in the Illawarra region in NSW on Tuesday to hang out with a few teammates, Moore did seem to have too much of a good time, and as a result had to take a sleeping tablet to sleep, which meant he slept through his flight to Brisbane. From this Moore missed out on a lunchtime clinic, a early evening training session, and from what it seems, the chance to ever skipper the Australian side.

Now I am sorry for all the sports fans who do not prefer the AFL or NRL, but this past weekend was not for you. For the rest of us, what more could be said other than what a weekend of football.

In the AFL , the Grand Final went down to the wire like everyone anticipated. With a premiership rematch between the West Coast Eagles and the Sydney Swans on the cards, and how a number of fierce and close rivalry matches that have occurred since then between the two biggest sides in the league, every single AFL fan was anticipating an extremely close match. And many were not disappointed.
